PAGE FOUR Organization Set Up For Administration Os GlßillOf Rights Veterans of World War II Eligible to Secure Loans Veterans Agricultural Loan Com mittees, recently established bv the Secretary of Agriculture to assist the Veterans Administration with the administration of the Farm Loan feature of the G- I- Bill of Rights, met in a one-day working conference hi Edenton last week to study regu lations under which loans to W orld War II veterans for purchasing and equipping farms may be guaranteed. The Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, commonly known as the G. I. Bill of Rights, authorizes the Veterans Administration to guaran tee loans made by private lenders to eligible veterans to purchase farms, to repair and improve farm buildings and to purchase farm equipment, t p to 50 per cent of the loan may tie guaranteed by the Veterans' Ad ministration, provided the. total a mount guaranteed does not exceed >I,OOO. Any application for. a loan guar anty must first be approved by the Veterans Administration. L'mier the terms of the Act. the Veterans Ad ministration is authorized to call on the U. S. Department of Agriculture to assist in determining whether the ; oan meets the requirements for guaranty specified in the Act. The I Administrator of Veterans Affairs and the Secretary of Agriculture i nave directed the Farm Security Ad ministration to establish a “Veterans’] .Agriculture Loan Committee” in each county to review all applications and to recommend approval or disapprov al to the Veterans Administration. The committee is known as the “Cer tifying” Committee and is made up of four members, three of whom are ] farmers now serving on PSA com-1 mittees appointed pursuant to the 1 Bankhead-« T ones Farm Tenant Act of 1937, and the fourth member a lousiness man who is also a veteran] of World War I or 11. The County Supervisor of the Farm Security Administration is di rected to serve as secretary to the committee. Mis bacterial research, which gave his name to the pasteurisation process, provided the basis for one of the widely accepted explanations of Chilean Nitrate's origin. Va» beds of Natural Nitrate In Chile's desert region are nat ural deposits enough to last hundreds of years—of one of the oldest and best known fertilizer materials. Mystery of their ori gin long has challenged science. Many theories have developed. Some say prehistoric plants were “nitrified” by bacteria in the soil. That’s what Pasteur’s work suggested. Others say they are decayed vegetation. There is a belief the nitrate beds are droppings of billions of birds. Another, that electricity formed them through centuries of violent storms. Some think the beds are rotted rocks; some think they are a crust pushed up from underneath.
