Letter By Helen Evans In New York Times Friends will be interested to know j that a letter written by Miss Helen W. Evans of Edenton was published in “The Drama Mailbag” in Sunday’s edition of The New York Times. M iss Evans’ letter, headed “Softer Accompaniment,” follows: On seeing “Street Scene” I was impressed with the progressive step which the production represents in the development of American opera, as such; but my spirit rebelled that ! such lovely artists should be sub jected to such blasting and unsym pathetic accompaniment. Perhaps the critics would tell me that the loud ness of the orchestra is for effect; and if that be true, I can only say the effect is torture for one who really likes music. Because of their experience in the music world Norman Cordon and Polyna Stoska seemingly chose to sacrifice tones on one or two occas -1 ions rather than scream the notes over an accompanirnpnt whose vib rations were too severe to be absorb- * ed pleasantly by the human ear. | Anne Jeffreys definitely had to hold | her two hands over her abdomen so j that she might summon strength j sufficient to be heard over the blasts.
