Haste, 67, died in Albe marle Hospital at 7:30 Monday night following a period of failing health. Mr. Haste was a veteran engineer of the Norfolk Southern Railroad, hav ing been in its employ 43 years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lucy Haste, and four sons, Meredith and Joseph, Jr., of Washington, D. C., Thomas of Panama, and Lieut. Shields Haste, with the U. S. Air Forces in Germany. A grandson, Charles Baker, also survives. Funeral services will be held this (Thursday) afternoon at 3 o’clock in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, with the rector, the Rev. Harold W. Gilmer, officiating. Interment will be made in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Erie Haste, Everett Haste, John Mitchener, David Warren, Lloyd Baker and Roy Rose, the latter two from Norfolk. Honorary pallbearers are D. B. Liles, Dr. W. A. Leggett, D. M. Reeves, Dr. R. H. Vaughan, Jordan Yates, J. J. Long, Dr. J. A. Mitchen er, Ernest Lee and T. J. Wilder. COLORED BIRTHS LEAD Colored hirths again led whites during February, according to the vi tal statistics report of the local Health Department. During the month there were 14 colored births compared with eight white births. Four colored deaths were reported during the month, compared with three white deaths. ON COLLEGE HONOR ROLL James L. Chestnutt, Jr., a fresh man at Wake Forest, was one among 251 making the honor roll during the fall semester. Hughes, 46, died sudden- ( ly of a heart attack at his home* in , Colerain Sunday. Funeral services were held Monday at the Colerain Baptist Church with the Rev. P. T. Worrell, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Folk of Harrellsville. The funeral was largely attended with the church unable to accommo date scarcely more than half who at tended. A Masonic funeral held with H. A. Campen, district deputy Grand Mas ter, officiating at the grave. Members of Colerain Lodge, No. 171, A. F. & A. M., of which deceased was a mem ber, served as active and honorary pallbearers. His wife, Mrs. Annie Hughes and a sister survive. Interment was made in Hillcrest Cemetery at Colerain.
