Scoutin' A round By PETER * * CARLTON Thirty-one little voices lifted in- song—thirty-one little fourth grade boys and girls singing “I’m Proud of Edenton—ls Edenton Proud of Me?” The little Sid Campens and the Tay Byrums and the Dolly Kehayeses and the Bobby Smiths, symbolic of all the chil dren, replicas of their parents —but with each his or her own little personality. Thirty,-one little voices repeating the 23rd Psalm — thirty-one voices making a “joyful noise unto the Lord” and asking the question which needs no answer—“know ye that the Lord He is tpflfb prayer of a little chap—invoking the blessing of the’Lord be- fore pursuing the daily task of school work —“God we thank thee for our JACQUIN'S ROCK 8 BOURBON tITAII MICE HB s i. so Sk PINT mßk *3. 00 y&wAkjiAm QUART nH & II vSSrgaaßl; ■ 70 PROOF MAM AND ROTTtCO «T CHARLES JACQUIN •! Help those who can’t Lord.” Yes, Edenton is proud of you—all of you, Sid and Tay and Dolly and Bobby and each of the thirty-one of you. Yes, Edenton is I proud of its teachers and school sys- 1 tem. Your fathers and mothers rea lize that there is always room for ad vancement and that is why We have our Parent-Teacher organization, the I Lions, Rotary, Farm Bureau, Cham- ] bor of Commerce and Merchants’ As- ' j soeiation and the Junior Woman’s . Club and the many others, too num erous to mi ntiyi'h, all working toward the common goal Os making this a better world for you to live in. We’re not good_ at counting noses, hut the whole body of the j Baptist Church and the wings, too, were filled by members of the Chowan and West Chowan Baptist Associations. With the sentiment expressed and the re sultant vote, with the exception of a few dissenting voices, there is no doubt that it is the desire of the great majority to continue with Chowan College. Those who make predictions stick their necks out and then often wished they had kept their “big fat” mouths closed. I’m no Baptist— but even I was filled by the fire of the sentiment felt and ex pressed by the mass. When'that little fellow got up and said, “I’m only a little farmer boy, I’ve THE CHOWAN HEKALD KDENfON, N. 0.. t'HUKSUA'I, MARCH 20, 1047 never been to college. I don’t have a dime Ln my pocket, but we have SSO in our treasury. My vote is you can have it so that other kids may get a chance to go to college.” I could hardly keep from letting out a war whoop of approval. I had all I * could do to stay glued to my seat and keep my big fat mouth from yelling out “by gadzooks, with spirit such as this boy expressed and of the majority of the good Baptist brethren present, you can’t fail.” No sir, if each and every person who was present took home just a bit of the fire aroused at this meeting—the twenty-five years of indifference (as someone expressed it) would be a thing of the past, and the kids of Northeastern North Car olina would have their chance at an education—a good one—that can be given at Chowan. Let’s go Baptists—Let’s go good ole Chowan! o The project chosen for this month by the Young Woman’s Bible Class of the Edenton Baptist Church, which met recently with Mrs. W. C. Bunch, | twenty-seven members present, was 1 that of remembering the sick and “shut-ins.” (This is a worthwhile pro gram and when once it is understood how much it means to be remembered I when one is down on his or her back, |or out of circulation due to some physical ailment, it should be a most forceful reminder that perhaps we could even make this worthy project a part of our all year round program. It is amazing how priceless fruit, ice cream, candy, flowers, books, mag azines and cigarettes if you smoke, become to the “shut-in”. How about | that—-some of you folks who have had a long dose of illness some time in your lives ?) o H. A. Dampen, Deputy Grand Master of Masons, officiated at two Masonic burials last week, which were well attended. Re ports from eyewitnesses describe the ceremonies as beautiful, dig nified and exalted. They say that the words of the Deputy as he de posits the pure white lambskin on the bier are most touching and inspiring. The lambskin apron which is given to each member symbolizes innocence and purity. o The neighbors of Mr. and Mrs. J. Lester JForehand rejoice with them on their 27th wedding anniversary, which took place on March 10. This is a most fitting example of marital hap piness for our young folks and is en couraging proof that the institution of marriage is one of the key factors to success in the "American” way of life. Due to circumstances beyond 1 the control of this writer, it was impossible to give credit to the Albemgrle colored quartet of Edenton for the splendid back ground singing on our “Let’s Be Neighborly” program last Sunday over Station WCNC. ’ What did you think of them? (Our time ran out). This seems to be one of those times when a 15-minute program seems to fly by before you really get wound up.
