Peter Carlton Is Honored By Lions Presented Silver Key at Meeting Held Mon day Night PeW Carlton, executive secretary of thp Edenton Chowan Chamber of Commerce and Merchants Association was honored by Lions International, by the Elizabeth City Lions Club, and by local Lions when he was tendered a silver key with a gold Lion's seal superimposed on it, and a certificate of membership designating him a Key Member of the International Asso ciation of Lions Clubs for exception al servise in building the organization. Mr. Carlton earned this distinction while a member of the Elizabeth City club. Since his taking over the ■work as executive secretary in Eden ton, ho has transferred his .member ship. L. WIGGINS regular Monday meeting which was held in the Lions Den. I George I. Dail, chief of police, and also a member of the Lions Club, gave an interesting and helpful talk on traffic safety and interpreting I .traffic regulations. Many euestions | were asked the chief in an effort to clarify misunderstandings concerning traffic on highway 17 and 32. Mr. Dail pointed out that often if one en deavored to enforce his legal right of way in some instances, he might end up with some property damage or physical injury, due to the fact that so many do not understand or pur- 1 posely disregard the traffic regula tions. Proctor, 1 of Raleigh, Dept, of Public Instruc tion, who is conducting the Retail : Institute foi the local merchants, ' presented by Peter Carlton, and Guil ford Flowers of Kdenton, presented by West Leary. Annual Senior Play Delights Audience Edenton High School's senior class play which was presented in the school auditorium Friday night de lighted a large crowd, many of whom referred to it as one of the best sen ior plays ever seen. The play, “A Ready Made Family”, provided many domestic mixups, which kept the audience in a state of laughter from start to finish. Each actor took his or her part well, the players “being coached by Ben Askew. Those in the cast were Beverly Moore, Davey Lee Ward, Nelle Perry, Charlotte Bunch, Ruth Goodwin, Marian Alexander, Rodney Harrell, Juanita Harrell, Melvin Ashley and Erie Coffield. Joyce Moore acted as student director and prompter. Annie Ruth White Will Represent Class I j Miss Annie Ruth White, daughter of Mrs. Edna White, who is a student nurse at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore, has been elected by the,student government to represent her class at the Nurses World’s Conference to be held in At lantic City, N. J. May 12-14. The educational director, the Supt lof Nurses and one other student i nurse will attend the conference also. Proc tor of Raleigh John Holmes, chairman of the com mittee on education of the Edenton Chowan Chamber of Commerce and Merchants Association announces that the course on “selling techniques” sponsored by the merchants group, is off to a flying start with each session well attended. The course emphasizes pleasantness, courtesy, tact, ability with the willingness to' render real customer service and is taught by H. S. Proctor, area in structor connected with the division tof Vocational Education, Department of Public Instruction, State of North I Carolina. j The only cost is the time and ef fort to : improve one’s business ef ficiency. There is no tuition but a \ small registration fee is charged. 1 This course in selling techniques is j i but one in many offered by the Vo cational Education Department. TOBACCO GROWERS FIND FERMATE VERY LIMITED Tobacco growers in Chowan County are searching every nook and corner for Fermate with which to spray their tobacco beds for controlling Blue Mold, says County Agent C. W. Overman. The fact that stands of plants are quite light in the beds is giving growers considerable concern in trying tc do everything possible to save all their plants. The supply of Fermate is very limited and grow ers are encountering considerable dif ficulty in obtaining the material. Two Fermate spraying demonstra tions are being conducted with B. T. Boyd and V. D. Hare of Cross Roads Community. Perry In a beautiful setting in the As sembly of God Church, Miss Rose Pierce Lawrence, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. D. B. Lawrence, on April 11 at 7:30 o’clock became the bride of James Lloyd Perry, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Perry. The Rev. J, F. Sly of Dunn officiated at the candlelight ceremony and was assisted by the Rev. Mr. Lawrence, pastor -of the church. For the occasion the church was beautifully decorated with white gla dioli, fern and candles. Nuptial mu sic was rendered during the ceremony by Mrs. Leroy Barrow, and Robert Stein of Norfolk sang “I Love You Truly."
