T. T. Brown, extension poultry
specialist from State College, was in
Chowan County last week giving ad
vice relative to control of poultry dis
eases and management of a poultry
flock. Mr. Brown, accompanied by
assistant County Agent Robert Marsh,
also visited the 4-H Club members
who are taking part in a chick pro
ject sponsored by the Home Feed &
Fertilizer Company.
In most cases, Mr. Marsh reports,
chicks were found to be healthy and
apparently in excellent condition.

Work Os Home Women
Praised By Secretary Os,
Agriculture Anderson
i
I Secretary of Agriculture Clinton
i I*. Anderson issued the following
(letter this week through Miss Verna j
Stanton, assistant state agent for |
the State College Extension Service,
in marking the second annual obser
vance of National Home Demonstra
tion Week, May 4-11.
“To the Women in Home Demon
stration Work:
‘‘American womanhood has' long
enjoyed a freedom and respect ac
corded to women in no other part of
the world. As in every other phase
of democratic life, this position of
esteem carries with it some definite
responsibilities. It is in the home
that the pattern of the culture of a
people is established. The cradle of
democracy is in a nation’s homes
and families.
“We may be happy that our cul
ture is one that emphasizes advanc
ing standards for family living—in
the ethical sense as well as in the
-practical. But nothing is so good
that it cannot be made better; better!
in terms of the family’s health, com- i
fort, education, happiness and under
standing. Under the leadership of :
the home demonstration agents of the j
Cooperative Extension Service, the
farm women of America will continue
to make daily home tasks easier, to
improve their homes and communities
| and to bring about happier and more
j wholesome living in rural America.
“It is a pleasure for me to join
with 3Li million rural women of the
[United States in giving recognition
jto National Home Demonstration
■ Week. May 4 to 11.
"I urge all women of the Nation
to join in pledging anew the ideal
of home and family as the Corner-'
Stone of freedom and the democratic!
way of life.

4-H Clubs Devote
Program To Health
Health King and Queen
Will Be Chosen at
Next Meeting
At the seven 4-H Club meetings
last week most of the time was de- 1
i
voted to a health program and mem
bers of the Rocky Hock Club pre- (
sented a very interesting program on ;
1 health.
According to Assistant County ]
Agent Robert Marsh club members ‘
[will be examined by the County health
1 nurse at the next ciub meeting, and i
the king and queen of health will be j
chosen at that time. ,
“Health is being neglected by far
too many of our club members as
[well as their parents,” says Mr.
Marsh. "We have heard much rec
ently over the radios and in the news
papers about North Carolina's number
one need—Good Health. This State
does have many problems, such as
inadequate hospital space, too few <
doctors, etc., but at the same time i
we should never overlook the fact \
.that good health begins at home. Re- i
■gardless of a person’s economic
status in life if does not observe
good health habits then he is apt to j
pay the penalty. Therefore, in order j
:to raise the health standards of the
citizens of our State, we believe there
I must he lots of educational work
done along nutritional and sanitary j
lines. Most people get enough food
to eat. However, many people do
not eat the proper kinds of food and
therefore are not healthy. If 4-H
club members can be taught the im
portance of drinking fresh milk, eat
ing fresh vegetables and getting the
proper amount of sleep, we believe
that they will be highly benefitted in
the future years from such lessons.”
