PAGE EIGHT SOCIETY NEWS Misses Anne McMullan, Frances Wood and Betsy Shepard, graduates of the High School Department of St. Mary’s, Raleigh, N. C., have ar rived to spend the summer vacation with their respective parents. George C. Ward, MM 1/c, USS Valley Forge, Philadelphia, Pa., is spending leave with his parents, Mr. j and Mrs. Julian Ward. Jack Badham returned to Wash ington, D. C., Wednesday morning after spending a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John . Bad ham. Miss l’ennie Bland left for her home in Asheville Tuesday night af ter spending the past three weeks visiting her sisters, Mrs. W. D. Holmes, Sr., Mrs. X. E. Copeland 1 and Mrs, A. S. Smith. Little Miss Anne Jackson of Green ville, is visiting her aunt, Mrs. IX M. Carter, and her father. Hunter Jack son. Miss Beth Toy of New Brunswick, , X. J., a student at St. Mary’s, Ral eigh, N. C., is the house guest of Miss Betsy Shepard. Henry Gardner is visiting his I parents, M'. and Mrs. W. H. Gard ner before going to Greensboro on June 10, .where he will work at en gineering during the summer. Young Gardner plans to attend Yale Univer sity next year to continue his studies in civil engineering. Mrs. W. D. Holmes, Sr.. Mrs. A. S. Smith, Miss Dorothy Holmes and. Miss Bennie Bland of Asheville spent , Thursday of last week at Nags Head. It was the first time Miss Bland has visited Nags Head in 25 years and. of course, she was amazed at the changes which have taken place. Mrs. W. 1. Wellons and mother. Mrs. W. J. Two Forest Fire Demonstrations In County Saturday Equipment Will Be on Hand to Enlighten Farmers Two forest fire fighting and con trol demonstrations are scheduled to be held in Chowan County on next Saturday, June 7, states County Agent C. W. Overman. These dem onstrations will be held at 10 o’clock ill the morning and .at 2:3(1 o'clock in the afternoon. The morning demonstration will be held in the woods of John N. and Roy Bunch on the Hertford highway, One half mile from the county line, while the afternoon demonstration I will take place in the woods of Bake | M. Hollowell on the Suffolk highway, | one-half mile from Cross Roads to | ward Edenton. I These forest fire fighting and con trol demonstrations are being staged by the North Carolina and Federal I Forestry Department cooperating with the County Agent. Heavy I equipment for plowing fire lanes to i control and stop fires as well as for fire control will be demonstrated. Lighter fire fighting equipment will also be demonstrated. The public is invited to attend these demonstrations and land own ers are especially urged to attend. During the last six years fires have damaged timber and killed hundreds of thousands of young trees. Most of the fires were caused by careless ness of someone. “Let’s study ways and means of preventing forest fires and controling them once they are started,” says Mr. Overman.
