PAGE SIX Colored 4-H Team Wins Second Place In District Contest Several Chowan Groups Take Part In Dem onstrations £ On Thursday, June 26, the winners from the County 4-H contest motored to Windsor for the District 4-H Club Federation. The County entered the girls’ team demonstration, boys’ team demon stration, girls’ dress review and boys’ grooming contest. Beverly Alexandria and Ida Long of Warren Grove 4-H Club gave the girls’ demonstration which won sec ond place. The title of the demon stration was “Building Strong Bodies By the Use of Green and Yellow Vegetables.” The boys’ demonstration team had for its demonstration: “The Use of a Tobacco Barn for Curing and Stor ing Sweet Potatoes.” The two boys making up this team were Lemon Sawyer, St. John 4-H Club, and Wil liam Roberts of Green Hall 4-H Club. They used a miniature tobacco barn in connection with their demonstra tion. The dresses for the county were ■worn by Elenora Hall of the Green Hall 4-H Club and Mabel Harris of Edenton High 4-H Club. Carnez Twine of the Edenton High Club and Ida Twine of Center Hill Club had charge of the dress review for the ! district. William Hall of the Green Hall 4-H Club entered the boys’ grooming con test. The boys’ teams did not win any special honors, but they gave a good account of themselves in the various contests. Accompanying the county agent, J. B. Small, and home agent, Esther Burgess, were three 4-H Club lead ers. They were Mrs. Sadie Fayton of Edenton High Club, Mrs. Arizona Fleming and Mrs. Ella Twine of Center Hill Miss Mary Harvey also joined the number. Lee Vance Spruill Passed Away Friday Lee Vance Spruill, 58, died at his home on North Broad Street Friday morning at 7:45 o’clock after suffer ing a cerebral hemorrhage a week before. Mr. Spruill had been em ployed for the past 32 years by the Edenton Cotton Mills. . Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Minnie Belch Spruill: three sons, Vernon L. Spruill of Kinston, Roy H. Spruill and Howard Spruill of Edenton; two daughters, Mrs. .A. J. Manning, Jr., of Williamston and Mrs. Clyde Adams of Edenton; three brothers, J. G. Spruill, C. U. Spruill and F. K. Spruill, all of Edenton; one sister, Mrs. Charlie Lane, of Edenton, and nine grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock at Quinn’s Funeral Home with the Rev. E L Wells officiating. Interment was made in Beaver Hill Cemetery The funeral was largely attended with many floral tributes sent by relatives and friends. Active pallbearers were J. U- Creech, Clarence Cates, Henry Rog erson, Charlie Hudson, E. C. Alex ander and Charlie Swanner. Honorary pallbearers were: J. W. Cates, Luther Sitterson, Dr. M. P. Whichard, H. T. Layton, Worth Lay ton, Frank Barrow, Louis Knox, W. A. M unden, Eurman Simpson, J. Ed win Bufflap, Mayor Leroy Haskett, P.'S. McMulian and R. F. Elliott. Dr. Paul E. Simpson Leaves Duke Hospital Friends in Edenton will be inter ested to learn that Dr. Paul E. Sim pson, formerly reident physician in obstetrics and gynecology at Duke Hospital is now associated with Drs. Proctor, Branaman and Payne in Raleigh. His practice will be limited fc to obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Simpson was stationed at the | Edenton base from March, 1945, to June, 1946, as a member of CASU 1 67 and Herdon 5.
