PAGE TWO Scoutin' A round By PITER CARLTON ' ' SLIM SANDERS says the Hotel Jcfeeph Hewes was practically full all week. Clyde Hollowell says the Triangle Restaurant experienced the best business on Sunday, John Paul Jones-Joseph Hewes Day, than he’s seen in years. ——-o Programs that run off smoothly remind one of a football game and the players who carry the ball over the line. Little thought is given to the backing Nthat the .rest of the teani mates render. The same goes for the celebration we had on Sunday. There was much behind-the-lines work that went on. For HSHRk > ft' jgljHppp .'. . -.. PETER CARLTON instance, Charlotte Nell Perry, Peggy Wilson, Margaret Griffin, Liza White, Julia Burton, Marvin Wilson, Jr., and a guest friend of Julia Burton, decorated the trailer which served as a plat- form for the affair. They did a swell job of it, too. (We placed an order for them to get some pop and ice cream at the Triangle and not one of them availed themselves of the oppor tunity. They must be Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts —and they certainly did their GOOD TURNS). 0. C. Long kindly worked overtime to get the trailer prepared. J. Clarence Leary and West Leary so generously placed their equipment at the dis posal of the Chamber of Commerce BULOVA, GRUEN, ELGIN and LONGINES WATCHES CAMPEN'S JEWELERS 9 rougKmo* * rms **n f x ~D a .. j C °NSOIETr E . Thanks should also be given to all those fine folks who gave of their time and services on the ’ program, including our Mayor, Leroy H. Haskett; chairman of : the County Commissioners, W. ; W. David Lawrence of the Holiness Church, Major A1 Williams, Commander Don Levy and Lieut. R. Gra ham, all of Elizabeth City; Cap | tain R. O. Swigart, assistant Chief of Staff of the Fifth Naval District, and all those fine Navy bandsmen who came from Nor folk on a hot day to make the ceremony possible. o No one can deny that the officers and crew' of the mine sweeper Linnett • lived up to every tradition of the rqE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, N. C„ THURSDAY, JULY 10,1047. Navy, Ensigns Palkovic, Larkin and Gee were the officers of the shipy The town councilmen and county commis sioners and their ladies who turned out deserve a mention too, in help ing to make that a fine dinner in honor of the guests at the Joseph Hewes Hotel. Slim Sanders and his fine wife also did much to make the affair function smoothly at the ho tel, and as good Chamber of Com merce members gave their whole hearted support to the program. Let 1 us not forget the other members of the Chamber who gave their support and backing by turning out. Nor Mrs. Ruth Vail, who read that in spiring poem. President “Izze” Campen came all the way from Nags Head and away from an engagement to be here to do his part. He had to go back right after the ceremony to be with his family and guests. Mrs. Paul Holloman of the Women’s Aux iliary, Mrs. Clarence Leary of the P. T. A., Walter Holton and Spec Jones of the American Legion and the Colonial Ball Club are among some of the fine organizations that Save their whole hearted support. liss Colwell, Miss Shaw, Bob Marsh, the Home Demonstration Clubs all share equal honors. We musn’t for get the fire department nor the street department or we’ll have a time of it. If we’ve forgotten any, it is an omission that is unintention al. But before we end this thought don’t forget our sweet and coopera tive little girl scouts who made the ceremony so impressive—we mean Lillian Leary and Peggy Williams. And this is final —the press, ing the Suffolk News Herald, The Daily Advance, the Norfolk Virginian Pilot, the Independent, the News and Observer, The Chowan Herald, and the radio W.C.N.C., including com mentator George Haskett, were splendid in their cooperation. In the theatre Jimmie Earnhardt flashed the notice on the screen. He also gave the crew members free entry into the show. It must be remember ed that the program was gotten up , in about four days time, and it was only possible because of all this help. o Those at the dinner included Mayor and Mrs. Leroy H. Has- . kett, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. By rum and son, West, Jr. Mr. and ‘ Mrs. Marvin Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Elliott, Mr. and , Mrs. C. C. Sanders, Mr. and Mrs. J. A1 Williams and Comasan- < dor Levy. It was a Tory friend- I ly and informal gathering. It wasn’t long 1 before nH were at ease and chatting like life long . ' friends. • . -■■■ —O* The Navy Band really took the ’ fancy of folks. Led by Chief Petty 1 Officer George Carlin, they supplied < fast , and snappy military pieces that enlivened ' the whole atmosphere. ■ There was much spontaneous ap- ; plause. Carlin said they had played , at six A. M. that morning, and af ter the ceremony were bn their way ' to another function. They travelled by station wagon. We say hats off to this most efficient and capable gtoup of men. o We were sorry for Lt. Bob Graham in away. He was un able to be at the dinner. All his work was done according to time and by himself. One lady was' heard to remark as the wreath dropped into the Bay,— “what an impressive sight!” Lt. Graham is* one of the three “greats” in helicopter activity in the United States. He was one of those decorated for his part in the rescue work when the Bel gian airliner crashed near New foundland not long ago. We were almost sure he was going to be at the Lions Club this past Monday night along with another of the great aces, Commander Frank Ericson, also of the Coast Guard, who was to have come along. But they were unable to make it. We were assured that they would appear before the club soon. That’s one meeting we don’t want to miss. o Major A1 Williams can make you sit up-and take notice too, and with reason. He not only can fly the planes, but he can also talk author-, itatively and write in the same sash- ' ion on aeronautics and trends in the . aviation world, both civil and mili tary. He used to write a column for ■ the Daily Advance of which we made a file for a long time. For some rea- ‘ son or other this readable column was . dropped. That his opinion is still ■ sought by editors of papers, we have evidence. When the story of his talk went in to many of the out of • town papers, a special point was ] made to ask if the Major made ref- ( erence to any possible military ( trends in the light of world condi tions. o Not too long ago down in Manteo we saw the Major zoom ' through the skies and do every thing but turn his plane inside out. We made mention -of the fact _in a column which was ap- j pearing in the Daily Advance concurrently with the Major’s ! column at that time, but that particular item didn’t appear foi some reason. We did gent ly chide the Major in it, for such antics in the skies and at his age. We do think a •great' deal of him, and are much impressed with his “savvy” on planes and his skill. (We still think that he’s much too valuable to be messing around like that in the skies . . . and there’s such a thing as the law of averages.) o We can’t forget Ericson, Graham and Girdler either of the Elizabeth City Coast guard. Three swell, modest fellows who can make a heli copter sing, talk, act and take a bow. I regret often that I have spoken; never that I have been silent. , —Publilius Syrus.
