PAGE TWO Mies Shiley Burke ■Receives Medal For Heroismjn Pacific Chowan Man Saved Two From Drowning When Ship Was Sunk Miles Shirley Burke, ex-Steward’s mate first class, USNR, has received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroic conduct from Rear Ad miral E. P. Forrestal, USN, Com mander of the Naval Base and Nor folk Naval Station. The citation, signed by James For restal, Secretary of the Navy, .for the President of the United States, is as follows: "For heroic conduct while attached to the USS Bush following the sink ing of that vessel in the vicinity of Okinawa, April 6, 1945. In the water and on a raft for five hours, ilurke supported two exhausted men who were unable to swim and one of whom was without a life jacket. His courage and perseverance were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Ser vice.” Burke, who had two years in the Navy during the war, lives with his wife and their six children in Chow an County, Route 1, Edenton, where he is employed in a lumber mill. Hollowell and unani mously carried, it is ordered that a special election be called for the pur pose of voting upon the question of issuing bonds in the aggregate amount of $400,000 to be used for the construction of additional class, rooms] for both white and colored students in Edenton and a physical culture bqilding at the High School at Small’s Cross Roads as a part of the 10-year building program ' recommended by the County-wide School Building Committee.
