She says there was a greater increase in attendance than has been experienced since the library has been in opera tion. The librarian this week released i the following report for the fiscal ' year ending June 30: There were 6,028 books circulated, i of which 2,600 were circulated in the 1 rural districts. 1 There were 724 new books added, a ’ contribution of 300 volumes having 1 been donated by Mrs. Charles Nixon i of Bridgeport, Conn. Some- new furniture was bought this past year amounting to over i $350. The addition of this furniture • -makes the library very much more 1 attractive. Receipts of the library amounted to > $1,390.36, with expenditures netting < $1,304.60. 1 Trustees of the library made an 1 appeal to the County Commissioners for an increase in the library’s ap- 1 propriation, resulting in an increase 1 of sls, which brings the county aid 1 up to $25 per month. 1 A request was also made for an 1 increase of appropriation by Town 1 Council. The City Fathers agreed to 1 ask the Electric & Water Department to furnish water and lights free here- 1 after and to increase the appropria- : tion from SIBO to $250 for the year. Library trustees and officers ex press their appreciation for the extra 1 funds allotted the library and invite ' friends, both white and colored, to visit and inspect the library. A band is in the making—a civic council is being planned—a golf club is, almost a reality—the first Red Cross Begin ners’ Course is about finished —An Intermediate Class in Swimming is about to begin—another Beginners’ Class will be started next week— A Junior Red Cross Life Saving Class will be started if we can get the teachers. A drum majorette corps is about to be started even be fore the band is organized—a band concert in August is a certainty with all. the members of the Famous Edenton High School Band playing. Townspeople will be asked to make it a “must” to attend, ii* the interest of forming a the various clubs are busily doing their parts to put the project over. o Walter Holton, Commander of ' the American Legion Post sug gested it would be a good idea if we have a community calendar, so that there will be no mixup in dates .of various events, with the possible failure of all due to the conflict. (This is one of the ideas which will be suggest ed at the, Civic Council when it is formed within a few weeks). • o A man from Baltimore, who is the representative of a prospective busi ness which is seeking to'locate here, remarked to some of those showing him around town —“If anyone ever again tries to tell me that the people of Edenton are not hospitable, I’ll surely tell them off. I’ve never been treated so nicely.” With the ex ception of a few—and you find this few anywhere you go—Edentonians, and the folks of Chowan County and the Albemarle are the finest you could ever meet anywhere. (And this is a heritage all must live up to, to maintain this “honored rank”, of just being “good neighbors.”) I KEYS < > <► o J ’ MADE FOR ANY LOCK ;; | 6-DAY SERVICE j; IGrif fin Bicycle Shop :: < > ELIZABETH CITY, N.
