I. Hart will leave today (Thursday) for Johnson City, Tenn., to visit Dr. Hart’s mother, Mrs. W. I. Hart, Sr. They expect to be away about a week. William George, a member of the Wake Forest football team, spent the week-end visiting his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Nick George. He was one of the officials in the Edenton-Manteo football game. Miss Kathleen Ward of Columbia, S. C., spent the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Ward of near Edenton. Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Forehand, Jr., of Greenville, were week-end guests of Mr. Forehand’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Lester Forehand. Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Tuttle, Miss Adelaide Tuttle and Mrs. Kate Wozelka spent the week-end at Nags Head. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Powell and son, Robert, Jr., visited Mrs. Powell’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Chest nutt, during the week-end. Mrs. W. W. Taylor of Robersonville spent Monday with her son-in-law 1 and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. William S. ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Campbell By rum announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Lillian Forehand Byrum, to Benjamin Franklin Askew of Woodland and Kenly, son of Alonza G. Askew and the late Mrs. Askew. The wedding will take place in December. PLANS FOR EDENTON BAND ARE PROCEEDING afternoon, at which time it was de cided to adopt the subscription plan to raise funds, with the drive sched uled to begin Friday. Aside from Mrs. White and Mrs. Goodwin, other members of the committee are Mrs. C. M. Speight, Mrs. George Twiddy, Mrs. R. N. Hines, Mrs. John Kramer and Mrs. Hector Lupton. This group will contact various business men for substantial contributions, but they desire it to be known that anybody wishing to make a contribution may send it to H. A. Campen, treasurer of the drive. A goal of $6,000 has been set and the committee has ad opted the slogan “Boost the Band”.. They are hopeful that the goal will be met, thus assuring Edenton of again having a band. During Monday afternoon hundreds of students paraded in the business section carrying about 50 signs on j which appeared brief phrases in ap pealing for a band. Funeral Services Held For Lloyd C. Burton Funeral services for Lloyd Chann ing Burton, 59, who died Monday night of last week at his home, fol- : lowing a lingering illness, were held at the home, Wednesday afternoon 1 at 3 o’clock, with the Rev. H. F. Sur- i ratt, pastor of the Edenton Metho- ’ dist Church officiating, assisted by 1 the Rev. E. L. Wells, retired pastor ! of the Baptist Church. Mrs. Frank ] Elliott sang “Abide With Me” ac companied by Mrs. W. H. Coffield on the organ. Pallbearers were J. M. j Jones, Sr., Herbert Leary, Jordan \ Yates, Roy Leary, Carroll Kramer, , J. Hi Conger, Sr., Philip McMullan ■ and Richard F. Elliott. , The large concourse of friends and j the many beautiful floral offerings at- j tested to the high esteem in which he was held. Burial was in Beaver Hill , Cemetery. A life-long and prominent resident of Edenton, Mr. Burton was a suc cessful business man, active in civic and fraternal affairs. He owned and ; operated a service station and res taurant until his health forced him to retire in 1945 after which he de voted his time to his farm. He was a member of the Baptist • C{lurch, Masonic Lodge, the Lions I Club, a Director of the Edenton Building and Loan Association, Chairman of the County Board of , Elections, Vice-President of the Wild- 1 life Club and a former Rotarian. The son of the late Ethel Walt : Burton and Ida Thomas Smith Bur- \ ton, he was twice married and is sur- '■ vived by his widow of the last union, 1 Mrs. Julia Layden Burton, and two 1 children, Lloyd C. Burton, Jr., and \ Miss Julia Burton; two daughters by , his first wife, the late Mrs. Annie Roberson, Mrs. Marvin Wilson and Miss Mary Arrington Burton. Two ] sisters, Mrs. Luta Burton Harrison of Norfolk, and Mrs. A. R. Nicholson of Elizabeth City, and one grandchild, ! James Channing Wilson, also survive. I Home Demonstration Club Holds Meetings The Center Hill Home Demonstra tion Club met October 3rd at 2:30 with Mrs. J. N. Boyce. The meeting was called to order by the president, Mrs. J. T. White and a short program was given- Those taking part on the program were Mrs. J. C. Boyce, Mrs. J. N. Boyce, Mrs. T. E. Chappell and Mrs. Emmett P. Jones. Miss Colwell, Home Demonstration' Agent, led a discussion and showed blueprints of the various typefi of heating and heating systems with and without central heating plants. We were also shown ways of con serving heat by insulating, weather stripping and by using storm wind ows. The group enjoyed a social period and Mrs. Boyce served a very at tractive plate. .
