PAGE TWO Fanners Becoming Interested In 1947 Peanut Referendum Many Questions Being: Asked, Says J. M. Price Peanuts are the center of attention in Chowan County these days because of the peanut marketing quota ref erendum, which will be held in all peanut producing communities on Tuesday, December 9. J. M. Price, secretary to Chowan County PMA Committee, says that farmers are asking a lot of questions about the referendum, because they want to know the facts before they vote. This interest has been created because practically every farmer in the county grows peanuts, and the major farm income in Chowan coun ty is derived from peanuts. Here are some of the questions, with the an swers: What measures will be taken to support peanut prices if farmers vote for quotas in this referendum ? Farmers who plant within their al lotment in 1948 will be eligible for Government loans and purchases on their peanut crops at 50 per cent of parity. Farmers whose 1948 peanut acreage exceeds the allotment will be eligible for price support only on peanuts produced in excess of the 1948 marketing quota, but only at 54 per cent of parity. What price supports will be avail able if farmers vote against quotas in this referendum? Only 1948-crop peanuts which are sold for crushing for oil will be eligible for price support, and at a level which probably will be about 45 per cent of the parity price for edible peanuts. The answers to these questions cover the information of most in terest to farmers. Next in line is the question: How many acres of peanuts can I plant on my farm under marketing quotas and receive full benefit of price supports ? That ques tion will be answered about Novem ber 15 when all farmers will be no tified as to the 1948 allotment estab lished for individual farms. The acreage planted to peanuts in the years 1944, 1945 and 1946 will be the greater factor used in determining the allotments. Mr. Price urges all farmers to bear in mind that a reduced acreage of peanuts, with price support, is worth more than the present planted acre age without price support. A re duction in acreage from that planted since the beginning of the war will enable farmers to carry out a better rotation of crops and restore the fer tility of the soil.
