' I parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Hollo well. William Sexton arrived home, Sat urday from Roanoke, Va., where he was a patient for over four weeks in the Veterans’ Hospital. Mr. Sexton was treated for a nerve ailment while in the hospital. Johnny Thigpen, a student at the University of North Carolina, spent the week-end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Thigpen. Mr. and Mrs. Horace Hurdle have returned to their home in Washing ton, D. C., after attending the funeral of Mr. Hurdle’s brother, Murriel Hurdle, whose body was returned from Europe for burial. Young Hurdle was killed in action at St. Lo on July 28, 1944. Final interment was made in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Misses Joyce Brunson and Joy Beam, tsudent nurses at Norfolk General Hospital, spent the week-end with Miss Brunson’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Brunson. Engagement Os Miss Marguerite Asbell Is Announced By Parents Mr. and Mrs. James Henry Asbell announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Marguerite Evans As bell, to Major Edward Earl Mcßride, Jr., USA, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Major Mcßride, who is stationed with the Intelligence Division in Washington, served in the European Theater of Operations as a rifle com pany commander in the 119th In fantry. Hospital Auxiliary Will Meet Next Wednesday Mrs. Roland Vaughan announces that a ..'eeting of the Hospital Auxil- I iary will be held Wednesday after noon, February 18, at 3 o’clock. Mrs. Vaughan also reports that Miss Harriett Leary will set up a book station at the hospital, so that every j member of the Auxiliary is requested to brfng a book which can be used. These will be collected by the Ward Committee for use at the book station.) s I Chaplain And Mrs. Harry C. Hand Back From Stay In Japan Captain and Mrs.‘Harry C. Hand and Son arrived in Edenton Sunday from Japan, where Mr. Hand has been serving as chaplain in the U. S. Army. They will spend about 10 days visiting Mrs. Hand’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Frank White before going to Belmont, N. C., to visit Mr. Hand’s parents. Chaplain Hand has been transfer red to Fort Bragg, where he will re port after his furlough is terminated. RED MEN MEETING CALLED OFF Due to the blinding snow storm in progress Monday night, the meeting of Chowan Tribe No. 12, 1.0.R.M., did not materialize. ISS4 l - y 4-H Club Camp At Naval Air Station Is Being Arranged Extension Service Will Staff Camp For Boys And Girls Chowan’s county and home agents are cooperating with W. S. Privott, manager of the abandoned Edenton Naval Air Station, in preparation for ! establishing a 4-H camp to be oper ated next summer. According to the Chowan agents, the Agricultural Extension Service j will staff the camp with a director, a handicraft instructor and perhaps a ! recreational director. | This camp will accommodate ade ! quately 150 to 200 persons at one i l time and can easily be arranged to ac commodate 400 to 500 at one time. An opportunity was given for any-; body present to ask questions of the j Rocky Mount group and after the. meeting was declared adjourned, sev- 1 eral tarried for quite a while to dis cuss various phases of the organiza- j tion with the enthusiastic Rocky Mount Jaycees. j Colored Maid Saves Burning Os Little Girl Due to the quick and brave action on the part of Virginia Blount, color ed maid for Mr. and Mrs. ' Walter Holton, their little daughter Lucy was saved from serious burns Sundayj morning. A pan of hot grease fell from the stove and would have fallen I on the little girl but for the fact that the colored girl quickly slapped the pan out of its cour?e. Though the falling grease missed the little Holton girl, the colored girl was painfully burned about the left hand.
