C. > 1 Campen Backing New ' Idea About Parking (Continued from Page One) * of requiring payment of only the time used by the motorist after over parking, which will temper the sit uation and thereby leave a better feeling on the part of those who happen to park longer than the time allotted.” In conjunction with his request | Mr. Campen read many letters re | ceived by the Chamber of Commerce ,i in response to inquiries sent to var ious towns and cities as to how they handle the over-parking situation. 1 The replies varied from strict en forcement to various sorts of conces -1 sions. ■ j Later when Town Council consider ed the request it was decided to table the matter for the present, j W. M. Wilkins appeared at the meeting asking permission to con struct a seven-foot concrete side walk and apron in front of the Beas ley property on Eden Street, recently purchased by the Quinn Furniture Company. This sidewalk will provide ingress and egress to the property which will be used for loading and unloading in the rear of the store. Mr. Wilkins’ request was granted. In conjunction with this request, the Councilmen again discussed the ; probability of an alley back of the stores in the block between Eden and King Streets. Mayor Leroy Haskett, W. J. Yates, J. Edwin Bufflap and J. Clarence Leary were appointed as a committee to make an investigation as to the possibility of providing this much needed driveway, which would not only be advantageous to mer chants in the block,' but would also be a distinct aid to firemen in event a fire broke out. William Privott presented the mat ter of a 4-H Club encampment at the Naval Air Station, stating that to put the spacious barracks in proper shape for use, as well as small other im provements, about SI,OOO is needed. He pointed out the advantages of such a set-up, which could be used by various large groups and stated that the County Commissioners agreed to pay half the amount if the Town will match the amount. Considerable time was devoted to a discussion of the idea and while ! the Councilmen as a whole were fav , j orably impressed, the fact was point -led out that the base has cost the j Town a considerable sum and that j with the current budget in bad shape, .there is no place to secure SSOO at | this time. It was further suggested 1 that the project is principally a County matter, so that with the ex pense to which the town has already gone in making the facilities available, the County Commissioners should be : willing to finance the necessary re ! pairs and improvements. The Finance Committee, cdmposed of J. Clarence Leary and J. P. Partin, together with Mayor Haskett, were instructed to confer with the County Commissioners when they convene next Monday, Don’t Neglect Them 1 Nature designed the kidneys to do a marvetous job. THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON. N. C„ THURSDAY MARCH 11, 1948. March 15. At Monday’s meeting Fire Chief R. K. Hall was authorized to employ J. T. Layton as a permanent fireman under the GI training program. A complaint was registered relative to a junk yard on North Broad Street, and Mayor Haskett was in-. structed to make an investigation. The unfairness of peddlers operat- ' ing in Edenton without a license was considered and Town Attorney J. N. Pruden was requested to look up the maximum license fee. The State charges $25, so that the Town will hereafter charge a like amount in keeping with the statute. !
