In 193 8 there were 218 miles of air j mail routes. On January 1, 1948,! thef® were 125,000 nvles of domestic | air mail routes. I From May 15 to December 31, 1918, 117,975 pounds, or approximate ly 3,000,000 pieces of mail .were car ried bjr air. For the year ending June 30, 1947, there were carried 28,465,028 pounds, or 772,185,070 .pieces of domestic air mail. The cost ■per revenue mile in transportation payments to airlines in 1947 was 6.9 |cents. In 1919 there was a total of j eight planes in operation on air mail routes, while in 1948 there are 796 1 planes in operation daily carrying do mestic air mail. Prior to the observance of the cele bration ' Postmaster C. E. Kramer will receive “Via Air Mail” stickers as well as pamphlets to be distribut ed among patrons of the local post office.
