PAGE EIGHT Demonstration dubs Planning Programs At Meetings In May Decided Not to Observe National Celebration May 2 to 8 By MRS. WALLACE GOODWIN County President, H. D. Clubs Chowan County is not observing National Home Demonstration Week, May 2-8, but each club will have a special program at its regular meet ing in May. This will be followed by a County-wide meeting, climaxing the activities of the individual clubs this month. The County program of work for club women is based on the theme of National Home Demonstration Week “Today’s Home Builds Tomorrow’s World” and planned to help make better homes, that tomorrow’s world may be a better world. The big aim of Home Demonstration Club work is to help the homemaker solve her problems through better use of talent, time material and money. The club women have made their homes more attractive and convenient, and devel oped cooperation and leadership that will help them in all community ac tivities. PROCLAMATION BY MAYOR HASKETT WHEREAS the prayer of every man and woman of good will in the world today is for peace and security and the peace of the world depends upon a strong and prepared United States of America, and WHEREAS a sound and stable economy is essential to a strong America and this is the urgent concern of business, industry, labor and management, government and Consumer alike, and WHEREAS the soundness and stability of our economy depend in the end upon the productive effort of each citizen and the thrift of each individual and family, and WHEREAS the Savings Bond program of the United States Treas ury Department encourages thrift and regular saving, works against further price increases and builds up buying power for the future, and WHEREAS the Security Loan campaign for United States Savings Bonds began in this community and across the nation on April 15th and runs until June 30th, I, therefore, as Mayor of Edenton, call upon all citizens to examine personal and family finances with the idea of buying as many extra bonds as possible during the Security Loan campaign. I urge all who can take advantage of the Payroll Savings Plan where you work or the Bond-a-Month Plan where you bank, to sign up for regular, systematic Bond saving. I commend the School Savings program which implants the habit of thrift in our children. Finally, since the Security Loan eampaign and the Savings Bond program depend upon the volunteer aid of public spirited citizens, I call upon all who- can help sell Bonds to others to offer their services to the local Savings Bond Committee. Club women arranged six education al exhibits in local store windows and had news articles published dur ing National Home Demonstration Week last year. A new Home Demonstration Club was organized in July, 1947, in Ad vance Community with 15 members. This made a total of 32 new members in Chowan County during the past year. Sixteen women attended 1 arm and Home Week at State College in August and one was a member of the Honor Class. Twenty-nine visit ed homes and gardens near Norfolk in May, and 36 went on a sight seeing trip to Williamsburg. They visited historic buildings and grounds and attended the showing of the “Common Glory”. The Home Demonstration Club women have canvassed the rural communities in the Red Cross, can cer and infantile paralysis drives. Four Clubs made kits of bath towels and packed them with cloth ing and other articles for children overseas. During this month each club will send a box of clothing and toilet articles to a family in Holland, selected from a list furnished by the State President of Home Demonstra tion Clubs. Chowan County was hostess to the District Federation of Home Demon stration Clubs last year with 550 club women attending. They also observed their 25th anniversary of Home Demonstration Club work with a banquet at the Legion Hut on October 23 with 154 attending. Spec ial guests were the husbands of club members, Commissioners and their wives, and past home agents and their husbands. Club women also cooperate with the 4-H Club work in Chowan County by serving as local leaders, encourag ing and instructing the girls in pro ject work, and With special programs. They are assisting with plans for the observance of 4-H Club Church Sunday in each church in the County, during the month of May. They also cooperated with the agents and 4-H Club members with the 4-H Health program and Achievement Day, and the County Council of Home Demon stration Clubs is again sponsoring the 4-H Dress Revue. Home Demonstration Club women know that the most important job in the world is that of making a more livable home for their families and that they must also have outside interests to be a more efficient and useful eitizen. Negro Women Observe National Celebration Os Demonstration Clubs The Home Demonstration Club wo , men of Ohowan County celebrated National Home Demonstration Week. 1 Sunday, May 2, with church service 1 in the Edenton High School audi torium with the Rev. H. L. Mitchell of Gates County as speaker. The pro ; gram was very nicely carried out with , Mrs. Elizabeth Armstead, vice presi- dent of the County Council, presiding. The women are gratoful to A. S. Hollowell and Mr. Beasley for the use of their windows. Articles in the windows were made by the club mem bers of the following clubs of the county: Green Hall, St. John, Canaan Temple, Cedar Grove and Warren Grove. .
