Time And Effort To Impve Land Bob Holloweli Develops Waste Area Into Plot “Fit For Picture” The application of soil and water conservation practices as planned in their soil conservation farm plans have consumed the effort and time of quite a number of Chowan’s farmers in recent months. Among the prac tices used for the conservation of wa ter and soil is that of permanent pas ture improvement. Bob Holloweli, farmer of the Cross Roads area, and member of the ChoWan County Board of Soil Conservation Supervisors, be gan working at the improvement of his permanent pasture last fall. His old pasture had become depleted of recommended species of fertility and infested with a weed pest which he called “hound tongue.” His first step in his improvement procedure was to break the land with a disc tiller. The land was allowed to settle for a few weeks, after which it was limed and fertilized. Applications of 4,000 .pounds of lime, 1,500 pounds of super phosphate and 30 tons of stable ma nure were made to the three-acre plot. These applications were thor oughly disced into the soil. Upon waiting for the seedbed to settle, Mr. Holloweli seeded it with a mixture of Kentucky 31 Fescue, white'and La dino clover. Annual lespedeza was seeded on top this spring. Mr. Hol lowell has watched this pasture grow and now considers it a fit subject for a picture. He has requested R. C. Jordan, Chowan County Soil Con servationist, to make a picture of it. According to Mr. Holloweli, several of his neighbor farmers have pro nounced it “about the best possible they ever saw.” Mr. Jordan states that Mr. Holloweli is the first farmer in Chowan County to use the Ken tucky 31 ’ Fescue-Ladino clover seed mixture. The Kentucky Fescue seed were procured from Bertram Hollo well, who grew a seed-increase plot last year in cooperation with the re&ftrfa, H. c„ TutimaiA*, may no, 1*4.8. MN!W! SSH I Soil Conservation Service. He, too, I has seeded this green-all-the-year grass into his Dallas grass-white clover-lespedeza pasture on the Cen ter Hill road. Still other farmers have been busy at the task of pasture improvement. H. T. Hobbs is now grazing his cows on ah acre of permanent pasture which, until a year ago, was a briar and weed patch. Willie Twine and Elijah Boyce are in the process of es tablishing permanent pasture areas for their family cows. T. C. Byrum has 18 white-faced Hereford cows on 1214. acres of pasture which he has recently completed seeding.. Mr. By rum is using Dallis grass, annual les pedeza, orchard grass and white clover for his grazing mixture. For his hogs he supplies annual grazing mix tures of lespedeza and Dallis grass. - Eli T. Byrum of the Rocky Hock area plans to have a place to graze his hogs next year. Since his soil is a deep loamy sand, he will have to re sort to the use of deeper rooted crops. He will- use 'Sericea lespedeza. T. Stillman Leary plans to seed a hog pasture to this crop also. According to Mr. Jordan, pastures such as these farmers are using con form to good land-use practices.
