George Lane Faces Charge Os Attempted Rape On Colored Girl Hearing: Is Scheduled In Recorder’s Court Next Tuesday Morning George Lane, 30-year-old • white man and veteran of World War 11, was arrested about 1.0 o’clock Satur day night by Patrolman S. J. West, charged with assault and attempt to rape a 12-year-old colored girl. At the time of the arrest, police say, Lane was drinking and stated that if he committed the crime as charged he knew nothing about it. According to police, Lane carried the girl to a toilet at the plant of the Edenton Electric & Water De partment on Freemason Street, but J - 1 . Hobbs, the change in ownership to go into effect June 1. The transaction has already been completed, the only remaining phase of the transfer being the approval by the John Deere Company. Mr. Hobbs will continue the busi ness in the same building as was used by Mr. Holton on West Eden Street. J. H. MdMullan, a veteran legislator, was the first to announce his candidacy, but later Eugene W. (Shorty) Perry of the Cross Roads I section, entered the race. For other county offices there will be no opposition, with all incumbents as candidates. These include M. L. Bunch as Register of Deeds, George C. Hoskins as Treasurer, W. W. By rum as County Commissioner-at large, A. S. Hollowell as Commis sioner from the First Township, J. R. Peele as Commissioner from the j Second Township, E. N. Elliott as J Commissioner from the Third Town- ship and J. A. Webb as Fourth Town ship Commissioner. For United States Senator there is a heated contest between Senator William B. Umstead, incumbent and former Governor J. Melville Brough ton. Both candidates have a strong following, with each group predicting victory for its candidate. In the Governor's race there are six candidates, including Charles M. Johnson, W. Kerr Scott, R. Mayne Albright, Oscar Barker and Olla Ray Boyd. For Lieutenant-Governor Dan Tom pkins and H. P. Taylor are the can didates. Thad Eure is a candidate for re election as Secretary of State and has as an opponent John T. Arm strong. For State Auditor, Henry L. PAGE SEVEN Bridges and Charles W. Miller are the candidates. There are three candidates for the office of State Treasurer, Brandon P. Hodges, James B. Vogler and Z. W. Frazelle. Forrest H. Shuford, who is seek ing re-election as Commissioner of Labor, has as his opponent Donald Boone Sherrill. L. S. Byrum, chairman of the Chowan County Board of Elections, reports that everything is in readi ness for the Primary election. Polls will be open at 6:30 in the morning and voting will be in progress until 6:30 P.
