PAGE TWO Coach Thompson Lions Club Speaker President Wisely Urges 100% Attendance At Next Meeting Coach Georye Thompson, Edenton High School football coach, was the principal speaker at the Edenton Lions Club meeting Monday night. Mr. Thompson gave a most interest ing talk on the character training aspects of football coaching and spoke briefly on the games already played by the Edenton Aces and praised the boys for their fine efforts. Next Monday night is designated as Lions International attendance night, with President Martin Wisely urging a 100 per cent attendance. Mrs. Corie White, supervising in terviewer of the Edenton office of the North Carolina Employment Service, will speak briefly, after which will follow a film on handicapped persons. Edenton Lions are considering staging another minstrel show this fall, and plans to that end are being , studied. I Hairdressers Hold Meeting In Hertford The Albemarle Hairdressers Asso ciation met in Hertford Friday at the Paragon Beauty Salon. The meeting opened with prayer led by the asso ciation’s chaplain, Mrs. Mary Kirby. Mrs. Anne S. Jenkins, president, read jthe association collect. Miss Sally Davis, secretary, read the minutes of the last meeting, which was held at Manteo, reports on letters received from the North Carolina Hairdressers and Cosmetologists Association and reports from the Eastern Carolina beauty supply houses offering their support to the Albemarle Association. Suggestions from the floor were made and approved to send delegates to the North Carolina Hairdressers and Cosmetologists trade show to be held in Asheville at the George Vanderbilt Hotel September 26, 27 and 28. Mrs. Anne S. Jenkins of Edenton, president of the Albemarle unit, and Mrs. Maude Cox of Elizabeth City, manager of the Virginia Dare Beauty Salon, were the two elected to attend. The hostess, Mrs. Sarah White, served dainty sandwiches and coca cola. White Births Double Negro In August White births in Chowan County ex ! actly doubled colored births during ; August, according to the vital sta tistics report of the local Health De . partment. During the month 28 white [ births were reported, compared with 14 colored births. There were four white and six col ored deaths during the month and one white and five colored stillbirths. A. S. HOLLOWELL WILL ATTEND GREAT COUNCIL OF RED MEN Arthur S. Hollowell plans to leave Sunday for Norfolk, where he will board a plane for Louisville, Ken tucky, to attend the Great Council of the United States, Improved Or der of Red Men. Mr. Hollowell is a past Great Sachem of Red Men in North Carolina, and is well known throughout national Red Men circles. SPEIGHT LEAVES SATURDAY FOR RELIANCE CONVENTION Clarence M. Speight, having quali fied some months ago, departs Satur day for Swampscott, Mass., to attend the national convention of the Reli ance Life Insurance Company agents. The convention will be held Septem ber 26 through the 29th. This will be the first national con vention held since 1940 due to trans portation, war, etc. . About 3,000 qualified agents are expected to attend the convention, which will consist of business and pleasure. Mr. Speight already has made a good start toward qualifying for the regional convention to be held at Myrtle Beach, S. C., next September. State Fair To Present Top Rank Amusements t ——i A sparkling array of outstanding entertainment features has been booked for the North Carolina State Fair starting October 19, Manager J. S. Dorton has announced. For the first time in many years, the lengthy midway will be graced by a new and different carnival. The James E. Strates, Shows, one of the fastest rising outfits in outdoor show business, will bring a half-hundred thrilling rides and good, clean shows to the spacious fairgrounds near Ra leigh. This amusement organization, a veteran in the field, has been re- built from the ground up within the tlast few years and now offers one of the finest carnival aggregations on the road. ( Grandstand features will be provid > ed again by George A. Hamid, New - York impresario whose top-notch en . tertainment has been a perennial sea , ture with North Carolina fair-goers.
