OPEN LETTER TO THE PEOPLE
OF EDENTON AND CHOWAN
COUNTY
Dear Folks:
We, the members of Wm. H. Cof
field, Jr., Post, No. 9280, Veterans of
Foreign Wars of the United States,
would like to take this opportunity to
acquaint you with our organization,
what it is, what it has done, what we
are doing, and what our plans for the
future are.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars is a
national organization established in
1899 by a group of Spanish-American
War veterans.
The local Post of the VFW was
ahartered February 21, 1947, with 36
charter members. This Post was
named after the first local man of
World War II to give his life in de
fense of his country. In the 3hort
life of this Post these are but a few
of the deeds that we have accom
plished:
A total of 127 veterans have re
ceived assistance in applying for den
tal work by our local service officer.
Veterans in need of hospitalization
have been gotten admittance to vet
erans’ hospitals through our facilities
on 19 occasions. We have also lent a
helping hand through financial assist
ance to a qumber of unfortunate vet
erans and their families. A total of
31 local veterans, in government hos
pitals have been aided by us through
gifts and tokens of our remembrance.
This VFW Post has been i active in
paying*" last tributes to our fallen
comrades upon their return to their
final resting place.
As you all know, we are without a
home. It is now time that we must
make further plans to continue for
ward in our good work in the better
ment of our community and nation,
and with our services for all veterans.
We have purchased a lot in the town
on which to erect a future home and
community building. Since the pur
chase of our lot, numerous people
have asked why we do not join with
other veterans’ organizations in the
erection of a mutual home. Since the
VFW is made up entirely of men who
saw foreign service, it is an entirely
different and separate organization,
though the purposes and aims of all
run along the same lines.
Now, the question arises, “Does the
VFW discriminate against veterans
who did not see foreign service” ? The
answer is “absolutely no.” It was not
of our making that we saw overseas
service. True, a few of us asked to
go over. Since the VFW is composed
of overseas veterans who saw com
bat and endured the hardships of bat
tle in the defense of our country, it is
clearly seen that the VFW is an en
tirely separate organization. For ex
ample, would you say the Gold Star
Mothers of America could merge with
any other women’s organization? So
you folks can see why we must go
ahead with our plans for our future
home as a separate organization. We
plan a simple, modest home. Our goal
is $6,000.00. Our members have
bought the lot. In a few days a
group of VFW members will contact
you and ask you to help us all you
can. If you aren’t able, we’ll still be
Hie best of friends. If our members
fail to contact you, send any contribu
tion to Veterans of Foreign Wars,
Building Fund, Edenton, N. C.
Sincerely yours,
Members Wm. T. Coffield, Jr., Post,
No. 9280, Veterans of Foreign
Wars.
