ElvinJ. Nixon Gets Paratrooper Wings Chowan Boy Graduates At Fort Benning No . vember 8 Private Elvin J. Nixon, eon of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Nixon, Route 3, has completed the J>asic airborne course with the Airborne Battalion, Student Training Regiment, at the Infantry School, Fort Benning, Ga. He was presented with the coveted silver wings of a qualified para trooper at the impressive graduation ceremony at Basic Class No. 5 on November Bth. During his Jive weeks of strenuous training at Fort Benning he learned the techniques and principles of para chute jumping and landing. In this period he also made five supervised jumps from a plane in flight at alti tudes of 1,000 and 1,200 feet, one of which was with complete combat equipment. A large part of his training cov ered safety procedures in and around airplanes both before and during ac tual flight. It is this training which has helped so materially to reduce ac cidents among America’s paratroop ers. Another interesting part of the training was a glider flight he took during his training period. While at Fort Benning, considered by many to be “America’s most com plete military post,” he enjoyed the same facilities that have made assign ment to the post one of the most cov eted in the Army. It was at Benning that so many of America’s war lead ers, such as Generals Marshall, Eisen hower, Clark, Bradley and Patton studied and taught. Many of the present faculty members of the schools at Benning studied and served under these distinguished soldiers.
