Farm Cash Receipts Far Above Last Year $475,472,000Rea1ized By Farmers First Eight - Months In 1948 North Carolina farmers are re ceiving more money for both their crop and their livestock enterprises this year, says Moyle S. Williams, farm management specialist at State College. As reported by the Bureau of Ag ricultural Economics, cash receipts from farm marketings during the first eight months of 1948 were $81,000,000 higher than in the cor responding 1947 period, Williams said. The total was $394,665,000 in L 1947 and $475,472,000 in 1948. Livestock receipts increased only i slightly, from $101,726,000 to $109,- 667,000; but receipts from crops | ‘ f jumped from $292,940,000 to $365,- Xj 905,000. For the nation as a whole, receipts from crops accounted for 40 ,per cent of the total, and receipts from live stock accounted for 60 per cent. In North Carolina, the crop percentage was 77 and the livestock percent age 23. • Williams asserted that despite the increase in gross income, many North Carolina farmers received lower net incomes because of an increase in pro duction costs. “Prospects point to a continuing s high cost of production, with the ex ception of feed costs,” Williams said. /. “Farmers who have been most effi cient in use of the factors of produc tion have maintained high net in- L comes. Prospects for the rest of I 1948 and into 1949 emphasize the importance of increased efficiency in North Carolina farms.” Colored Births Lead White In November Colored births led white births in Chowan County for the month of November, according to the vital statistics report of the local Health Department. Is he elig ible to receive war service compensa tion in event of disability incurred in or made worse in service ? A. Yea. President Truman pro claimed the cessation of hostilities effective at noon, December 31, 1946. However, it has been ascertained that records of the Department of the Army do not show the hour of en listment. Accordingly, it is presumed that an enlistment on December 31, 1946, was entered into prior to noon on that date. However, the disability must have been incurred in active service before July 26, 1947. Q. I did not select an optional settlement of my NSLI. In event of my death, is my widow entitled to settlement in a lump sum if she wants it? A, No. Payment in one sum may be made only if designated by the insured. Q. Does Veterans Administration give flags to the next of kin of a de ceased veteran? A. Yes. Flags are issued to drape the casket of a deceased veteran and are given afterwards to the next of kin. Q. What income provision is at tached to compensation payable to the widow of an American soldier killed in line of duty? A. There is no income restriction to compensation paid for service connected disability or death.
