PAGE SIX Don't Let Death Take Your Holiday Forces Join In United Effort to Prevent Accidents “Don’t Let Death Take Your Holi day!” That slogan keynotes the National Safety Council’s nationwide campaign to hold down the huge Christmas- New Year’s accident toll. Each year accidents cast a shadow on the holiday celebration of thous ands of families throughout the na- : tion, according to Council figures which show the year-end holiday sea- ■ son to be the most dangerous period < in the year. ] Joining forces with the Council in a united effort to call public attention ] to the extra holiday hazards and the 1 extra caution needed to overcome t them are city and state officials, civic j groups, local safety councils and 130 ] national organizations. Traffic accident deaths on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day total more than two or three times the annual daily average. “Every family in the country looks forward to Christmas as the time for joy and celebration, and that is what the holiday period should be,” said Ned H. Dearborn, president of the Council. “But every year thousands of fam ilies see Christmas joy turned into suffering and tragedy because of un necessary and preventable accidents. “To keep death from taking your holiday costs nothing, takes no time and requires only a little effort—re fusing to take the drink you can’t handle, yielding the right-of-way, waiting for the light to change, dis carding a string of Christmas tree lights with worn insulation. “These are little things—but they pay off in happiness. C., Dec. 14, 1948. The Town Council met this day in the Town office at 8 o’clock P. M. in regular monthly session. Present, L. H. Haskett, Mayor, J. Clarence Leary, G. M. Byrum, J. P. Partin, Clyde Hol lowed, J. Edwin Bufflap and W. J. Yates. The minutes of the previous meet ing were read and approved. On motion of J. C. Leary, seconded by W. J. Yates, it is ordered that Office Street, Railroad Street and Queen Street at the cotton mill vil lage be paved if funds can be made available. On motion of J. C. Leary, seconded by W. J. Yates, it is ordered that the Town appropriate $2,400 from Electric & Water Department funds < to Chowan Hospital for lights, water ■ and sewerage for fiscal year 1948- ' 1949.
