Board Os Health Adopts New Rules Regulations Apply to Places Where Food Is Handled According to R. L. Griggs, Jr., sani tarian of the Chowan-Bertie Hfealth Department, the State Board of Health recently adopted rules and regulations governing the sanitation of frozen food lockers, poultry pro cessing plants, as well as some revi sion of meat market and abattoir rules and regulations. The following definitions shall ap ply in the interpretation and enforce ment of these rules and regulations: Abattoir The term “abattoir" shall mean and include any place or establishment where meat animals, such as hogs, cattle, sheep, etc., are * slaughtered, processed, cured, smoked or rendered for human consumption. Meat Market The term “meat market” shall be considered to mean and include any buildings, houses or enclosures in which meat or meat products or poultry are offered for sale. Frozen Food Locker Plants The term “frozen food locker plants” shall mean freezer locker plants, refrig erated locker plants or any similar establishment which offers to the public, for lease or rental, separate compartments or individual lockers for the storage and preservation by continued refrigeration of meat and meat products for human consump tion. This definition shall apply also to any cold storage plant where meat f. is processed, stored or refrigerated by the operator’ for ultimate sale, or where meat is stored by the operator for others. Poultry Processing Plants The v term “poultry processing plants” shall mean and include any place or establishment where domestic fowls, such as chickens, turkeys,* etc., are slaughtered for human consumption. No permit to operate shall be issued until a sani tary inspection by a representative of the State Board of Health shows that such establishment complies with these rules and regulations. Appli -1 cations for such inspections shall be made to the local Health Departments. Permits also being issued by local Health Department. It has been the practice in past , years for grocery stores, gas stations, i etc., to offer for sale sausage, bologna, I franks, etc., without meeting the mar , ket requirements set up by State Board of Health. However, under present rules and regulations such . establishments shall meet meat mar ket requirements, unless these meat products are offered for sale in cello phane package or similar package ’ form.
