Uncle Sam Says
Are you counting the days to
Christmas? There’s nothing oompar
able to the warmth of Christmas
feeling. Second best perhaps is
the feeling when you have the mane;
to make dreams come true for you
1 and your family. The most efficient
and sure way to build up a healthy
backlog of savings is through your
company’s Payroll Savings Plan for
buying United States Savings
Bonds or your bank's Bond-A-Month
Plan. Every exira savings bond you
add to your bond holdings is one
more powerful stride toward seen
rity. The best Christmas gift you can
give your family is to start a 10-
year plan of automatic monthly bond
buying. For example, your invest
ment of §18.75 a month in a savings
bond every month until Christinas,
1957, will result in a nest egg of
$2,498.94. U. S 7 rgnsury Department

Some Safety Rules
For Holiday Season
It only takes a small amount of
carelessness to turn the joyful Christ
mas holiday into a tragic event. The
Christmas tree is the danger spot.
There are a few simple precautions
that will assure a safe and merry
Christmas.
Never burn real candles on your
tree.
Don’t risk using frayed cords and
broken plugs.
Avoid placing powerful lamp bulbs
near fancy ornaments, synthetic ma
terials, paper or cotton.
Don’t go away and leave your tree
lighted.
Be very careful when smoking
around Christmas package wrapping
material.
Secure the tree by wires to the wall
so that tiny tots will not be able to
bump or pull it over.
Place your tree so that, standing or
fallen, it cannot block a doorway
which might be needed to escape
from the room.
If you go in for elaborate decora
tions, better make sure they’re all
made of incombustible material.
Flameproofed\ materials can be pur
chased at many stores. Insist on
. them.

Kitchen Accident Rate
High, Says Home Agent
The kitchen is the location of many
accidents, but with a little extra care
and caution most of these accidents
can be avoided, says Rebecca Col
well, home demonstration agent for
the State College Extension Service.
The good housekeeping rule, “a
place for everything and everything
in its place,” is especially important
in the kitchen.
According to the National Safety
Council, most kitchen accidents are
falls. Many of these occur through
the use of such makeshift devices as
chairs, stools and boxes for climbing.
A safe step stool is an essential piece
of equipment in any modern kitchen.
Grease and water should always be
mopped up to eliminate the danger of
slipping and falling.
Scalds and burns also rank high
among kitchen accidents. Miss Col
well suggests that pan handles be
turned away from the front of the
stove to prevent accidental tipping,
and that a cover be used when carry
ing scalding liquids. Before opening :
a steaming kettle or roaster, cover 1

side of the cover first. Follow direc
tions when using a pressure cooker,
making sure that the safety valve is
in working condition.
Knives and other sharp tools are
involved in 14 per cent of all home
accidents, the home agent points out.
Sharp knives should be kept in a safe
rack or special drawer.
Miss Colwell suggests these, other
kitchen precautions:
Keep matches out of children’s
reach.
Don’t use gasoline or kerosene to
start fires.
Keep all dry cleaning operation-'
out of the kitchen.
Check stove pipes and flues regu
larly.
Store all medicine, insecticides and
drugs away from the kitchen and!
where children cannot reach them.
