PAGE TWO Traffic fnlatioiis Cost 977 Motorists Licenses In March Drunken Driving Tops List With 555 Re vocations With revocations for drunken driv ing topping the list, 977 motorists lost their drivers’ licenses during March as a result of traffic violations, the Motor Vehicle Department an nounced today. Os this number, 768 were revoca tions and 219 were suspensions. Drunken driving accounted for 656 revocations, bringing to 1,752 the number of drivers losing their li censes in 1949 to date from this cause. The March total was 274 under the number for last March, when 829 persons lost their licenses for drunken driving. Forty-four motorists lost their license during the month for driving drunk out of State, 52 for driving drunk and miscellaneous, 29 for driv ing after license revoked, 20 for two offenses of driving drunk, 24 for reckless driving and miscellaneous, 21 for speeding over 75 miles per hour and miscellaneous, four for larceny of automobile, one for man slaughter, 18 for transporting liquor,. 19 for two offenses of speeding over 55 miles per hour, and 72 for failure to maintain proof of financial res ponsibility. In addition, 529 drivers were con victed of reckless driving, which re quired no revocation or suspension on the first offense. A total of 6,398 persons were con victed of moving violations which do not constitute revocation or suspen sion for the first offense. Leading in this type of violation was speed ing, with 2,135 offenders. Other violations included: failing to have driver’s license, 1,260; faulty equip ment on vehicle, 371; improper lights, 154; running through red light, 282; miscellaneous traffic vio lations, 109; failing to stop at in tersection, 63; passing school bus, 57; failing to dim lights, 54; parking on highway without lights, 13; leaving car on highway unattended, 16; driv ing on wrong side of road, 55. Os the total number' of persons convicted of moving violations, 4,718 were North Carolinians, and the re maining 1,680 were out-of-state driv ers. Driver Examination Continues In Effect Despite information to the contrary, the program calling for re-examina tion of drivers in North Carolina is continuing in force, Major Sam L. Gaynor, assistant director of the Di vision of Highway Safety of the De partment of Motor Vehicles, points ■out. “Some drivers in the State are un der the impression that a bill is pend ing in the General Assembly doing away with the re-examination of drivers,” Major Gaynor said. “Con sequently re-examination in the Ra leigh area has dropped off 50 per cent.
