It was the first time for some of Chowan's entries to be represented in the affair. Chowan entered a total of 59 fat hogs in the show. Wilbur Harrell of Rocky Hock entered 12 hogs, A. C. Griffin 12, Tom Asbell of Tyner 11, E. M. Howell of Tyner 8, and Julian Ward, who farms near Ryland, en tered 16 hogs. Rufus Smithson, Jr., of Tyner, and Bezar Davenport of Edenton entered fat steers in the show and sale. These two 4-H boys have spent a great deal of time feeding, grooming and caring for their steers and each is determ ined to be a winner. Rufus has an Aberdeen-Angus beef calf and Bezar has a Hereford. The show and sale was held at Fred Webb’s warehouse on Westover Boulevard. 4-H Club Girls Make 20 Million Meals In 1948 Food Program Experience Helps Girls To Understand Food Values Will 20 million meals placed end-to end reach around the world? No body seems to know. But it is a fact that some 400,000 4-H Club girls last year planned, prepared and served 20 million meals as part of their train ing in the National food prepara tion program. In North Carolina, 8,555 were enrolled in the project, ac cording to L. R. Harrill, State Club Leader, and the 1949 program is off to a good start i Designed to help 4-H’ers understand food values from both health and economy standpoints, the program > also develops desirable personal food habits. The youthful cooks range in age from 10 to 21 years, and as in all 4-H Club activities they “learn by do ing.” Use of home-produced food is stressed. Merit awards will again be provid ed by Servel Home Economics De partment. They are educational trips to the National 4-H Club Congress for state winners, gold-filled medals for county winners, and six S3OO scholar- <WW»/l > /WS/W'i/W»A/WS/WN/WWS/VW'/V'/VN Don’t Neglect Them! Nature designed the kidneys to do a marvelous job. Their task is to Veep the flowing blood stream free of an excess of toxic impurities. The act of living— life itself—in constantly producing waste matter the kidneys must remove from the blood if good heath is to endure. When the kidneys fail to function as Nature intended, there is retention of waste that may cause body-wide dis tress. One may suffer nagging backache, persistent headache, attacks of dizziness, • getting up nights, swelling, puffiness under the eyes —feel tired, nervous, all worn out. Frequent, scanty or burning passages ; ' are sometimes further evidence of kid ney ur bladder disturbance. !
