clerk of the Chowan County Draft
Board, all registrants who have not
returned their questionnaires to the
local Board office are requested to do
so before May 20.

Twenty-three district supervisors
and farm leaders attended the Albe
marle Soil Conservation District ban-,
quet Friday night, May 6. The meal
was served in the Episcopal Parish
House of Elizabeth City by one of the
Episcopal ladies’ group.
J. E. Morgan of Pasquotank Coun
ty, secretary of the Board of District
Supervisors, was in charge of the
meeting. Mr. Morgan served in the
place of Lloyd C. Bunch of Chowan
County, chairman of the Albemarle
District Board, who was unable to
attend on account of illness.
C. D. Fetzer of Elizabeth City, dis
trict soil conservationist with the Soil
Conservation Service, introduced the
speakers of the evening. C. W. Over
man, Chowan County Agricultural
Extension Agent, was the first
speaker. Mr. Overman, after a round
of interesting tales, spoke of the re
sults of a joint program which was
carried out in his county by the Ex
tension Service, the Production Mar
keting Administration, Vocational Ag

building and farm drainage.
E. B. Garrett of Raleigh, State
I Director of the Soil Conservation Ser
vice in North Carolina, was the sec
ond and main speaker of the occa
sion. Mr. Garrett spoke, among other
. things, of the needs of various soil
conservation practices for the State
and of the fine work being done by
farmers throughout the State to im
prove and protect their land. He
pointed out many improvements such
’ as greater crop yields, use of more
cover crops and better fertilizers, bet
| ter pastures and drainage improve
ments.

was shown a sound film which por
' trayed certain methods of conserving
1 and improving soils and how the work
was being accomplished through soil
conservation district and other co
i operating agencies.

supervisors; C. W. Overman, County
Agent; J. M. Price of the Production
and Marketing Adminitsration, and
George Conner, Jr., and R. C. Jordan
of the Soil Conservation Service.

Revocations
A total of 1,230 persons lost their
driver’s licenses in April as a result
of traffic violations, the Department
of Motor Vehicles has announced.

! list of revocations. A total of 722
persons lost their licenses in orth

’ 2,474 the number of persons losing
their right to drive as a result of this
violation.
Ninety-six motorists lost their li
censes during the month for driving
intoxicated outside the State; 45 for
driving drunk and miscellaneous; 17
for driving after license suspended, 28
for driving after license was revoked;
36 for two offenses of driving drunk;
17 for two offenses of reckless driv
ing; 36 for speeding over 75 miles per
hour and miscellaneous; nine for lar
ceny of automobile; 34 for trans
porting liquor; 12 for two offenses of
speeding over 55 miles per hour; 98
for failure to maintain proof of finan
cial responsibility, and five for speed
ing over 75 miles per hour out of the
State.
In addition, 556 persons were con
victed of reckless driving, which doe?
not require revocation or suspension
for first offense.
1 A total of 5,721 persons were found
guilty of moving violations which do
not constitute revocations or suspen
sions on the first offense. Leading
this type of violation was speeding,
with 2,099 offenders. Other violations
included: No driver’s license, 1,409;
faulty equipment, 262; improver
lights, 176; running through red
light, 269; miscellaneous traffic viola
tions, 149; driving on wrong side of
road, 44; failure to stop at intersec
tion, 43; failure to dim light, 43.
Os the total number of persons con
victed of moving violations, 4,724
were North Carolinians and 997 were
out-of-state drivers.

' Visits Holy Land
Frank E. Parrish, chief fire con
! trolman, USN, of Route 2, Edenton,
’ recently made a tour of Nazareth and
1 the Sea of Galilee while serving
' aboard the destroyer USS Vogelge
: sang. The ship was anchored at
> Haifa, Israel, as a unit of the Sixth
Task Fleet and Task Force 167, in the
Mediterranean area.
The tour included the famous
Church of the Annunciation, the
Church of St. Joseph, built over the
site of Joseph’s old carpenter shop,
the Synagogue of Nazareth and the
City of Tiberias on the shores of the
Sea of Galilee.
Parrish, who entered the naval ser
vice September 20, 1932, received his
