Outfit Out to Beat Rec
ord In Filling Va
cancies
The drive is on! Edenton had the
fastest reorganized National Guard
company in North Carolina. Now
Edenton is out to beat all records and
fill up all of its vacancies in its Heavy
Mortar Company. There are many
changes in the National Guard set-up,
just as there are always changes in
anything progressive. Higher pay,
better uniforms, retirement benefits,
new techniques of training by motion
pictures and actual demonstration and
working on the latest and most ad
vanced equipment are attractive in
ducements. The lowest pay every
quarter is a check for thirty dollars.
A guardsman is paid while enjoying
an interesting two hour training ses
sion with buddies he knows in the
community.
Captain William P. Jones, com
manding officer points out that a
certain number of guardsmen can re
ceive appointments for West Point
outside of the regular channels. If
a man goes off to school or college
he can still be a member and arrange
ments can be made for him to attend
training sessions near where he is at

U. S. DEATH RATE TOPS
The United States may have the
highest standard of living in the
world, but it also has one of the
world’s highest accidental death rates.
The U. S. rate in 1948 was 67.1
deaths per 100,000 population, as com
pared with a world-wide postwar
average death rate of 48.9, according
to the National Safety Council.
Only three countries topped the ac
cidental death rate of the United
States —Iceland, Egypt and Austria.
