THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1949. ~~ - xhi S~ WEEK'S BLePtHOUGHT WE SHOULD EAGERLY USE AND APPLY DIVINE GUIDANCE: How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? —Heb. 2:3. __ In The Midst Os Life There Is Death Another striking example that in the midst of life there is death is reflected in the terrible calamity Satur day afternoon when two brothers, Thomas Erwin Eason and Malcolm Dawson Eason lost their lives by drowning in the Chowan River. Two fine specimen of manhood left their home hale and hearty, and suddenly the entire community was ( shocked to hear that their strong mor tal bodies were transformed into corp ses. The writer only a little over four years ago went through a similar or deal, except for the fact that he was on the scene and saw two loved ones go to a watery grave and was power less to do anything to prevent it. God moves in mysterious ways His purpose to perform, and it is not for we mortals to understand why we are called upon at come time or other to I face sorrow and hardships which ap pear too burdensome for us to bear. I It is somewhat comforting, however, I to have a host of friends come to our I rescue in such a dark hour, as was the I case with the writer and will be borne I out by relatives of the two Eason I brothers. The writer, therefore, ex- I tends his sympathy to members of the I mourning family. And while kind I deeds and expressions of sympathy do I have some effect in soothing aching I and bleeding hearts, time alone is I able to at least partially close the I wound which brings so many tears I and heartaches. Be On Time! Next Tuesday, November 15, a I bloodmobile is scheduled to be in I Edenton for the purpose of obtaining I donations of blood. It is useless to I argue the merits of this blood pro- I gram, and it is encouraging to note I the large number who have volunteer- I ed to give a pint of blood. The next most important thing is to I be on time to give your blood. TfIYIDRTHEATRII I EDENTON, N. C. She had hoped to have the Chowan County Home Demon stration Clubs’ State Fair exhibit set up in Quinn’s Fur niture Company’s window, but due to some of the ma terial being late in arriving, it could not be done. How ever, Miss Colwell feels certain the fexhibit will be set up at Quinn’s next week. o ,W. W. Porter, father-in-law of the two Eason boys who drowned Saturday, is another person to learn to know how friendly people in Edenton are when one has trouble and sorrow. Mr. Porter and the two victims were real pals, and with tears in his eyes he tried to tell me Wednesday morning how nice the people were during the sad and trying ordeal. “I’ve had a lot of sorrow,” he said, “but never have I experienced such kindly deeds and interest in one’s misfortune. This kindness has been indelibly impressed upon my mind never to be forgotten and always to be cherished.” I’ve been through the same thing, Friend Porter, and I want to shout a loud “Amen.” o I’m not turning this column over into a classified sec tion, but a pair of ladies’ black gloves were found in the Methodist Church after the funeral of J. W. .Cates last week. Anybody who lost the gloves should contact Mrs. Edward Speight. o Col. Bill Rosevear has won the most football guessing contests at the Rotary Club and, as I stated before, he does not allow sentiment to enter into his predictions. Select PINT PINT 63c 73c speaking about sentiment, Comdr. A. von Keller takes the cake. He’s a real booster for the Edenton Aces, and in the last two games he predicted the Aces would score 96 points against Hertford and last week he marked down 100 points for the Aces against Washington. That’s sentiment all right, but how about making Friend von Keller’s predictions come true. Aces? o— ; Major W. R. Lucius has returned from the rifle range at Cherry Point, and told me he had a dickens of a hard time seeing the target. What he needs, he said, is to have a pretty girl hold the target, for then he could see it. Yeah, he’d miss the whole plan of salvation to be sure. o J. B. I. Education Center in operation in the Edenton High School. Superintendent of schools John A. Holmes, himself a veteran of World War I, congratulated young Wright and expressed his pleasure over the democratic way in which the veterans that come from surrounding counties, as well as Edenton, are conducting their meetings, and in enthusiasm in learning displayed by the G. I. stud ents. Mr. Holmes wishes it to be known that a veteran can register any time in tfid elementary or high school divisions of the G. I. Center. He urged that vets take notice of the fact that their G. I. benefits run out dn 1956. There has been a noticeable increase in the enrollment in the school in the last two months. Classes are held from 4 o’clock until 9:30 P. M. for elementary division, and from 5 till 10:30 to the high school divisions. • Veterans who wish to finish their schooling may apply to Mr. Holmes any time up to 5 o’clock at his office in the Edenton High School.
