PAGE TEN Vets Have Difficulty In Computing NSLI Refunds, Says Quinn Local VFW Post Ready To Give Any Assist ance Needed To date the William H. Coffield, Jr., Post, No. 9280, has been given assist ance to quite a few veterans in com pleting their applications for the 2.8 billion refund on National Service Life Insurance, Post Commander Henry G. Quinn said this week. “In spite of the widespread publici ty given the formular for computing the amount of refund due policyhold ers, we find many veterans who do not know how to figure refunds,” Com mander Quinn said. He pointed out that, according to information released by the Veterans Administration, the amount of the re fund can be arrived at fairly accurate ly- The formular is based on the age of the veteran at the time he took out his policy, and the number of months it was in force from the date the poli cy was issued to its anniversary in 1948. In other words, a veteran with a SI,OOO policy dated July 1, 1942, would figure his refund on the basis of 72 months —or until July 1, 1948, the “cur-off” date for computing the di vidend. The age groups with the amount of the refund per month for each SI,OOO of insurance, follows: 40 years and under, 55 cents; 41 —52 cents; 42—49 cents; 43—46 cents; 44—43 cents; 45—40 cents; 46 —37 cents; 47—34 cents; 48—31 cents; 49—28 cents; 50 —29 cents; 51 —24 cents; 52—23 cents; 53—22 cents; 54—21 cents; 55 and over—2o cents. Thus the veteran who took out $5,000 on Julyl, 1942, at age 21, would be entitled to five times 55 cents or $2.75 a month for 72 months, for a total of $198.00 The maximum amount any veteran can receive is $528. The refund will be made on both term and converted policies, but no payments will be made for periods during which a policy was lapsed. Some 16,000,000 veterans are eligi ble for the dividend, and to date, more than 10,000,000 of them have applied.! Commander Quinn reminded that Post | . 9:28o is ready to assist .airy veteran in j completing his application. r- —■';. Edenton Police Arrest 72 During October According, to Chief of Ppiice George f. Ward, Chowan County farmer, finds Kentucky 31 fescue-ladino clover pastures to be far superior to native grass and lespedeza pastures. In Chowan County and lying just North of Edenton, North Carolina is a community known as Paradise Com munity. Most of the farmers of the area are row crop farmers and have heretofore paid little attention to anything other than corn, soybeans and peanuts. With the introduction of Kentucky 31 Fescue grass and Ladino Clover to Chowan County, however, these farmers are diverting, at least some of their attention to permanent pastures. Row crop acres are becom ing grazing acres for hogs and cattle. Many of the Paradise farmers are finding, as suggested in their Soil Conservation plans which they develp id with the Alebmarle Soil Conser i cation District, that these pastures constitute excellent land-use for their i Class 11-A and Class 111-A soils. Their (soils, they assert, are well adapted to the production of the Ladino Clover ! and Kentucky 31 Fescue grass. I Typical of the case experiences with ' these new-type of permanent pastures is that of Leonard J. Bass. Two Greenville Marble & Granite Works 710 Dickerson Avenue GREENVILLE, N. C. From April Ist, 1949 to September Ist, 1949 an average of forty hogs grazed every day except for one week in July when it was dry. Bass says his pasture saved him many dollars n hog supplement feed. “Soybeans could have never produced such pro fits as this grass and clover pasture,” be concluded. Bass plans to convert more and more of the Class 111-A land which he owns to the production of these graz ing crops for more hogs and more cattle. “This is what it is best fitted for,” he said. Just across the woods from Bass, E. L. Ward is finding Kentucky 31 Fescue and Ladino Clover excellent for beef cattle grazing. He planted six acres in 1948. Approximately 2000 days of cow grazing were obtain ed from this planting. Ward says, “1 wish I had 100 acres of it.” Last month Ward increased his acreage of this kind of pasture to 24 acres. He has decreased the acreage of Na tive grass pasture by a like amount. Neighbors of Ward and Bass are also planting pastures on their Para dise acres. Hillary T. Hobbs has planted 2 acres; Lloyd White, 6 acres; Frank White, 3 acres; J. Wallace Goodwin, 2 acres; Noah Goodwin, Sr., 3 acres; Louis Goodwin, 3 acres; Da vid Goodwin, 4acres, and Frank Ward and B. W. Evans several acres. In most cases these Paradise farm ers were assisted in the planning, fertilization, and seeding of their pastures by R. C. Jordan and George Conner, Jr., of the Soil Conservation Service. Mr. Jordan, Soil Conservationist of the Chowan Work Unit suggests that an expansion of such pastures as these of Paradise community can well take place on other Chowan soils which are similar in characteristics and on soils that are washing.
