Overman Urges Pruning Fruit Trees December Good Month, Says Chowan County Agent “December is a good time to prune 1 fruit trees,” says County Agent C. W. « Overman. He gives the following suggestions: 1 Prune young or non-bearing apple j trees lightly. Remove only water ( sprouts or suckers that crowd the main scaffold limbs. Do not cut back the end of the main scaffold limbs or those that form work of the trele. Lightly pruned apple trees will come into bearing earlier than those that are being heavily pruned. Open the center of peach trees but do not cut out all the small shoots! growing from the upper side of the larger limbs. Head back lightly the main branches and thin out laterals that crowd main branches. Prepare to spray fruit trees about two weeks after the leaves have fallen or after they become dormant. Spray with- either oil emulsion or lime sul fur. Secure information in spraying from your county agent. You«might want to plant pear trees which are blight resistant. The Bald win and Orient are two of the varie ties that are offered for sale by nurserymen. Write me if you do not know where to get them. E. H. S.
