Soil testing is the only means by
which farmers can determine the
lime needs and other plant food needs
of their soil, says C. W. Overman,
County Agent. Liming fields without
a soil test is haphazard and often
time results in unnecessary expense.
“This is the season of the year when
farmers have time to take soil sam
ples of their fields, send them in to
the State Department of Agriculture
for analyzation, get back the reports
and apply the lime needed,” says Mr.
Overman. “Dolomitic lime is usually
recommended by the Soil Testing
Laboratory because it contains ap
proximately one-half calcium oxide
and one-half magnesium oxide and we
find that magnesium is needed on a
large percentage of our soil. Shell
lime contains calcium oxide only.
“Soil containers and field history
sheets may be obtained free of charge
at your County Agent’s office, from ,
your Vocational Agricultural teacher ]
or from Soil Conservatiionist. The
only cost to the farmer is the small 1
amount of postage necessary for
mailing the samples. On the back of 1
the field history sheets is complete '
instructions for taking soil samples,
also anyone of your agricultural '
agencies will be glad to explain the ,
proper method of taking samples.” ,
“A summary of the soil tests made i
from Chowan County soils during the 1
period July 1, 1947 to June 30, 1948,
showed that 30% of these soils were 1
low to very low in calcium, 17% low !
to very low in potash. On the other ,
hand, 70% of the soils were medium ■
to high in calcium, 83% were medium ,
to high in magnesium, 72% were ,
medium to high in phosphorous and :
35% were medium to high in potash, i
These figures indicate that quite a '
number of fields show a need for lime, 1
yet not all of them by any means. In
general we are running low in potash j
and this element particularly needs '
to be increased for cotton and pea
nuts."
Dolomitic lime should be applied at
least 60 days or more before the crop
is planted, the sooner the better.
Overman urges farmers to utilize
some of their time during this slack
period in taking soil samples and hav
ing their soil analyzed so that they
will not be liming and fertilizing in
the dark.

Members of the Senior Class were
occupied last week in completing
some unfinished business. Such busi
ness was pertaining to annual photo-’
graphs which the staff could not take
before the holidays. Another prob
lem which faced the Seniors earlier
was the selection of their class pin and
class invitations. The class chose to
have pins to match their rings. The
invitations are yet to be selected.
The Senior Class sponsored a T-
Dance at the Armory after the High
School vs. Faculty basketball game
last Thursday night. In the future
more of these dances will be sponsored
and they will be properly chaperoned.
This week you must step aboard the
airship journeying to Senior Wonder
land. Among the group of determined
students are two that are the most
outstanding.
The first is a girl that has been
quite occupied with the Senior project.
She is circulation manager of the
“Edentonian” which is a project that
tjikes plenty of knowledge to fulfill.

Wonderland. When Senior superla
tives were voted on Morris won as the
“best-all i around.”
This student is one of the bus driv
ers, in fact, last year he was chosen
as the most outstanding bus driver.
Morris is well liked by both the facul
ty and his class-mates.
