PAGE FOUR Interest Is Lagging In Canning Tomato Program In County Few Farmers At Meet ings to Sign Con tracts For Acreage According to County Agent C. W. Overman, the cannery tomato program ia progresing very slowly in Chowan County. Last week four meetings were scheduled for the purpose of explain ing the contract offered by the G. L. Webster Company and fanners were given an opportunity to sign contracts if they so desired. At the Edenton meeting five farm ers attended the meetings scheduled for Rocky Hock, Chowan Community Building and Gliden. Mr. Mapp, rep resentative of the G. L. Webster Com pany at the close of the work on Tues day afternoon was quite disappointed in the sign-up. Mr. Mapp stated that the prices and other provisions of the contract are in .line -with other con tracts of other canners this year, and in many instances is much better. Mr. Overman states that his posi tion in this venture is to help farm ers avail themselves of an opportunity to utilize some of their land being taken out of allotted crops. He be lieves that where a reasonably good job of growing tomatoes is done the return per acre for the land and labor will be good compared with many of the crops now growing. Mr. Overman sees the possibility of cannery tomatoes and other crops for canning becoming a part of the farm ing program in future years if farm ers find it profitable. If farmers in dicate sufficient interest and a reason able acreage is contracted for by Sat urday, January 21, it is possible that signing of contracts will be extended through January 28. On the other hand, if the progress this week does not speed up, it will be concluded that farmers in Chowan County are not interested enough to justify the pro ject this year. Contracts are avail able at the County-Agent’s Office and farmers who are interested should come in and discuss the matter 'and sign contracts just as soon as possible if they are interested in seeing the project succeed. That is, the “Battery” method —where they are grown on wire and in metal pens 20 inches by 30 inches. The chickens are completely clean —inside and outside—from day-old chicks to broilers and fryers. Our oldest chickens will be 8 weeks old on Friday, January 20th, and will weigh from 2to 2Vz pounds, live weight. We’ve already found that this i 3 a more expensive way than the “barn-yard” method but feel that you will agree with us that they are worth the difference. After all, ham costs more than shoulder, and sirloin steak more than stew beef, and for the same reason—it’s better! We are receiving 150 pure-strain New Hampshire Red chicks each ! week and will have approximately that number to sell weekly begin- \ ning this Friday. We will dress and deliver on Fridays only, but live ( chickens may be secured at any time, if available. We’d be glad to have you visit and inspect our little enterprise just | I Y 2 mile down Paradise Road. We’re rather proud of our start and j ! hope that you’ll help it grow.
