at the Chowan Hospital Auxiliary
meeting Wednesday afternoon of last
week. The meeting wos held at the
nurses’ home, with Mrs. M. F. (Bond,
Jr., president, presiding.
Mrs. Corbett held the group's at
tention as she interestingly related her
experiences with the children of Eng
land during the war years. When the

moved at once and the school age
group were moved to surrounding
country in thirty villages. The hous
ing situation was desperate as there
were 38 babies at this time and there
‘ was no place to locate them.” Mrs.
Corbett stated that she combed the
; countryside and finally found an es
tate near Birmingham, where Hie own
er agreed to house the infants in his
elaborate stables. The neighbors
received and helped care for theee in
’ fants in their temporary quarters.
About three yearn ago, she said, these
babies were removed to London.
In 1940 Mrs. Corbett became Ma
tron of John Groom’s Cripple-league
in London. This hospital had several
buildings on extensive grounds where
300 crippled girls and women lived.
The hospital was heavily bombed on
several occasions with a loss of many
lives, and the crippled patients were
finally evacuated to central England.
Mrs. Corbett stated that she found
the English people only achieved the
practically impossible by diligent ef
fort and cooperation.
In closing, Mrs. Corbett declared,
“The effort and cooperation of our
community has made possible our
Chowan County Hospital, and it is
my earnest desire to be present at the
opening of our beautiful new build
ing.”
