Mr. and Mrs. 0. B. Perry spent the week-end in Chapel Hill visiting their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Watts Poe, who last week became the parents of a son. Mr. Perry returned home, while Mrs. Perry remained to spend a few more days. English Nurse At Auxiliary Meeting Mrs. M. F. Bond, Jr., Ap points Committees For New Year Mrs. Elizabeth Corbett of Edge wear, London, now a nurse at Chowan Hospital, was the principal speaker at the Chowan Hospital Auxiliary meeting Wednesday afternoon of last week. The meeting wos held at the nurses’ home, with Mrs. M. F. (Bond, Jr., president, presiding. Mrs. Corbett held the group's at tention as she interestingly related her experiences with the children of Eng land during the war years. The hous ing situation was desperate as there were 38 babies at this time and there ‘ was no place to locate them.” Mrs. Corbett stated that she combed the ; countryside and finally found an es tate near Birmingham, where Hie own er agreed to house the infants in his elaborate stables. The neighbors received and helped care for theee in ’ fants in their temporary quarters. About three yearn ago, she said, these babies were removed to London. In 1940 Mrs. Corbett became Ma tron of John Groom’s Cripple-league in London. This hospital had several buildings on extensive grounds where 300 crippled girls and women lived. The hospital was heavily bombed on several occasions with a loss of many lives, and the crippled patients were finally evacuated to central England. Mrs. Corbett stated that she found the English people only achieved the practically impossible by diligent ef fort and cooperation. In closing, Mrs. Corbett declared, “The effort and cooperation of our community has made possible our Chowan County Hospital, and it is my earnest desire to be present at the opening of our beautiful new build ing.” Following disposal of routine busi ness, Mrs. Bond announced the follow ing committees to serve during 1950: Finance chairman—Mrs. R.
