Included in this mileage of ditches were four group ditching projects. Among the farmers digging these outlet ditches last year were: 'A. M. Forehand, W. H. Winbome, Arthur Byrum, Dr. H. E. Nixon, J. G. Wood, R. C. Holland, J. L. Hassell, J. C. Wills, Oliver J. Forehand, E. B. White, B. P. Monds, F. A. Ward, C. B. White, J. Elton Jordan, J. Bertram Hollowell, Mrs. R. H. Goodwin, J. P. McNider, Mrs. E. L. Winslow and Mrs. W. T. Forehand. The technical assistance necessary in the construction, planning and de sign of these ditches was furnished by Soil Conservation Service Men located in the county. Financial assistance at the rate of 10 cents per cubic yard of dirt removed was furnished by the Production Marketing Association. According to R. C. Jordan, Chowan County farm planning technician of the Soil Conservation Service, requests for assistance of this kind continue to be numerous. Farmers are rendered assistance with their drainage prob lems through individual farm soil and water conservation plans, says Mr. Jordan. Farms with conservation plans already set up will continue to receive priority in this work. Several miles of drainage canals were cut in Bear Swamp last year by the Bear Swamp Drainage District. The work done by this Drainage Dis trict was also done in cooperation with the Soil Conservation Service but \jas additional to the work listed or mentioned above. It may serve as a comfort to us in all our calamities and afflictions, that he who loses anything and gets wis dom, by it, is a gainer by the loss. —L’Estrange. psfj iSKssj! JANUARY 26, 1960 —fit j Senior Class News j | |<HMHHHIHHHItHH»IIHHmiIHIIIHIIHUIIHHIIIIimimiIIn[»I Richard Hoskins, the Senior Pre&i , dent, returned home earlier this week I from the Chowan Hospital, where he underwent an operation for appendi citis. Richard’s classmates visited I him frequently. Now, the Seniors are in the midst of mid-term exams, and you ask, “Will there be an outstanding Senior this week?” Yes, here is who’s who. This petite girl’s name is Gecola Ward; even though “Cola” is quite small she can scan a lot of territory. Gecola sings alto in the school glee club. She was a member of the cheer ing squad—this year she was elected as chief cheerleader. She is a mem ber of the French Club. The position of photo editor falls into the capable hands of Gecola. In the superlatives, “Cola” was chosen as the “neatest” and the “most talented.” She is quite active in church gather ings also. Next week exams will be over and faces will be seen enlightened again —but what Seniors will outdo others ? CHRISTIAN CHURCH SERVICES Services at the First Christian Church have been announced as fol lows by the pastor, the Rev. E. C.
