Large Number Vets ! Own Own Farms; Most Doing Own Work With Help From Im mediate Family Nineity-three per cent of the World War II veterans taking on-the-farm training under the GI Bill, as of the beginning of 1960, either owned their own farms or were operating farms which they in some way controlled, ac ' cording to the Veterans Administra tion. The remaining 7 per cent were training on farms-owned by others. The total number of veterans in farm training was 347,000. Nearly all the veteran farm owners, Veteran Administration reported, had small family-type farms. The veteran on them did most of the work himself, with some helff from members of his immediate family. In this program, however, the farm must be large enough to meet the re quirement of being properly equipped and large enough to keep the veteran busy on a full-time scale. It must also be productive enough to bring a. satisfactory* income, at least by the end of the training program. Another requirement is that the farm is of a nature to permit instruc tion in all aspects of farm manage ment, of the type in which the veteran is being trained. Wisely Appointed To Welfare Board Succeeds W. J. Taylor Who Has Served Lim it of Six Years I According to West Byrum, the Cho wan County* Commissioners have ap pointed Dr. Martin Wisely as a mem ber of the Chowan County Welfare Board, the appointment being effect ive as of April 1. Dr. Wisely succeeds W. J. Taylor, who has served six years, the legal limit for a member to serve on the Board. Mr. Byrum informed The Herald that Dr. Wisely accepted the appoint ment much to the pleasure of mem bers of the County Commissioners as well as the Welfare Board. Mr. By rum at the same time was high in praise of Mr. Taylor’s services on the . Board, saying he served well and that ■ the Commissioners and members of tile Welfare Board regretted that he is, by law, requested to sever his con ■ nection.
