KEDENTON ELIZABETH CITY Farmers Improve i Drainage Practices Ditches Renovated For Proper Drainage In Wet Periods (A group drainage ditch in the Rocky Hock community has been recently renovated. The ditch was improved 1 along the section which is located ' on the farms, owned 1 by Lester and W. W. Harrell. The improvement made consisted of construction for increasing the capacity of the ditch and for stabilizing the banks. Ac ! cording to Lester Harrell, the ditch ’ was too small for the proper removal 1 of the water surrounding watershed, 1 particularly during wet periods like 1 those which came in 1949. Parts of 1 his crdp fields, he said, were sub jected to inundation and drowning out of crops. The straight or verti -1 cal ditch banks constituted a serious ■ maintenance problem, * not only be cause of falling in during wet spells, ! but because of bank erosion. The Harrells believe the renovated ' ditch will be adequate to meet their [ needs. The water-carrying capacity 'of the new ditch is several times greater than that of the old ditch. The sloped banks on the new water way, once stabilized, should greatly reduce the maintenance work neces sary to keep it clear. 1 Mr. Lester Harrell plans to begin , work on the bank stabilization job , right away. Sericea lespedeza will : be seeded to help prevent bank cav . ing and bank erosion. i Mr. Harrell declares, “Hogs will i not be allowed the luxury of cooling I and .wallowing in this ditch. I am , planning to put an electric fence on ; both sides.” s According to R. C. Jordan, of the l Soil Conservation Service, 2.408 cubic yards of dirt were removed. This , I gave the Harrells a waterway 6 to 8 i'feet wide in the bottom and eighteen .feet wide at the top. The improve , ment operations were done with a . dragline excavating machine. Technicians of the Soil Conserva tion Service assisted the Harrells THE CHOWAN HERALD EDENTON, N. C, THURSDAY, MARCH 28, 1960. with the surveying, .planning, design ing, and layout of this ditch. The Production Marketing Admini stration assisted him in defraying the ' coat of the renovation.
