Top List Os Foods
The U. S. Department of Agricul
-1 ture, announcing its plentiful foods
' list for July, called the attention of
1 shoppers to the wide variety of fresh
1 and processed foods abundant on
Southern markets, the local county
and home demonstration agent for the
State College Extension Service, said
. this week.
1 Fresh vegetables listed for July, she
said, include, carrots, onions, Irish po
tatoes, fresh com, snap beans, beets,
cabbage, lettuce, and tomatoes.
The watermelon and cantaloupe sea
son in the South will be in full swing
in July and picnic planners can count
on heavy supplies all during the
month, the county agent said.
Broilers and fryers are still in the
plentiful class, as are dairy products,
hens, eggs, peanut butter, fresh and
frozen fish, and rice.
Local availability of the foods on
the July plentiful list may vary from
area to area because of transporta
tion and buying preferences, but most
markets in the 'South, the home agent
pointed out, will have abundant sup
plies of the listed foods.
Shoppers who buy seasonally plen
tiful foods will, as a rule, find them
the most economical buys, he added.
Peanut Growers Urged
To Dust For Leafspot
Howard R. Garriss, extension plant
pathologist at State College, this week
advised Tar Heel peanut growers to
| get ready to begin dusting their crop
THE CHOWAN HERALD EDENTON, N. C„ THURSDAY, JUNE 29, 1950
for control of leafspot disease.
The first application of dust, Gar
riss said, should be made not later
than July 10, at the rate of 18 to 20
pounds per acre. Treatment should
be continued at two-week intervals for
a total of three applications if weath
er conditions are moderately wet to
dry. However, a total of four appli
cations should be made if the weather
is unseasonably wet.
A sulfur-copper dust mixture con
taining 4 per cent metallic copper is
recommended. Tests conducted last
year in Bertie, Chowan, Gates and
Hertford Counties showed this ma
terial to be superior to sulfur dust
alone.
In 11 demonstrations, sulfur alone
gave an increase of 209 pounds of
nuts per acre over untreated plots,
while copper-sulfur gave an increase
of 473 pounds per acre. At an aver
age price of 10 cents per pound for
nuts, and after subtracting $1.60' per
acre for sulfur dust and $3 per acre
for copper-sulfur dust, growers who
used sulfur increased their profits by
$19.30 per acre and those .who used
copper-sulfur increased their profits
by $44.40 per acre.
In addition, dusting for control of
leafspot improved both the yield and
quality of the hay sufficiently to cover
the cost of the treatment.
Garriss said tests by a peanut pro
ducts manufacturer last year failed
to reveal significant differences in the
general quality of nuts for processing,
regardless of whether the nuts came
fiom copper-sulfur, sulfur, or unflust
eu plots.
