Six Chowan 4 H’«s At Raleigh Meeting ( 1,200 Boys And Girls j From Every County 1. In Attendance 1 During the week of July 24-29 the State 4 J H Club Week celebrated its j 25th anniversary. Just 25 years ago that week approximately 400 boys and girls from several different counties gathered at the State College campus for the first 4-H IWeek. Since that . time 4-H Club work in North Caro- > lina has increased until now the en rollment is the second highest.in the nation, and thousands of boys and girls are learning the art of living through their 4-H Club work. Approximately 1,200 boys and girls from every county in North Carolina attended the 4-H Week. While at the : college the club members saw demon strations on such things as Clothing Care, Seed Treatment, Dairy Foods, Floor Sanding, Dairy Production, In- ] sect Control, Home Beautification and Pastures. There were Dairy Judging Teams and also Livestock Judging . Teams which competed for the honor , and privilege of representing North 1 Carolina in the National contests. Approximately 18 boys and girls were tapped for the 4-H Honor Club, which is the highest honor which the North Carolina Club can bestow upon its members. Governor W. Kerr Scott addressed the 4-H Club members and proudly said that he was once a 4-H Club member. Although the club members at- tended many demonstrations and heard several notable speakers, there was still time for pleasure. They were taken on a tour of interesting places ■ in Raleigh, among which was the Gov ernor’s Mansion. The afternoons were devoted to various forms of recrea tion. 4-H Club members who attended 4-H Week this year from Chowan County were Hilda Rae Harrell, Shir ley Harrell, Mary (Emma Perry, Mar ion Meekins, Jackie Bunch and Audrey Pearce. HEALTH FOR AU | A COMMUNITY PROBLEM The modern American community has sound health laws to protect its citizens against communicable di seases. Among protective measures taken by most American communities for provisions for a sanitary water supply, safe waste disposals, and clean streets. Local ordinances provide al sr‘ for the sale of pasteurized milk and pure foods only. In addition to these general health protection measures, many modern American communities carry on at tacks against specific diseases. An example of this is the tuberculosis program, the various phases of which fall into the general categories of case finding, treatment, rehabilitation, and health education. Since tuberculosis has no obvious symptoms in an early stage, the search for undiscovered cases of the disease must be made among appar ently healthy people. In many modem communities case-finding programs are conducted. These include tuber culin testing of children (simple skin sensitivity tests) and chest X-rays, which can reveal evidence of the di sease in an early stage. Tuberculin testing and chest X-rays serve to “screen out” suspicious signs of the disease. Further tests are necessary before a diagnosis of tuber culosis is made. When a case of tuber culosis is found, prompt measures must be taken to get the sick person under treatment. Adequate facilities for the care and treatment of the community’s tuber culosis patients are of prime import ance. There should be sufficient beds for the care'of all patients who need hospitalization, whether the tubercu losis hospital program is planned on a state, city, or county basis, or on a combination of the three. Tuberculosis often brings with it severe social and economic problems. Many of its victims face financial dif ficulties during this long-term illness, especially where the patient is the bread-winner of the family. Laws governing public welfare for the com munity should include provision for adequate financial assistance to the tuberculosis patient and his depend ents. Because of the long time re quired for tuberculosis treatment, some states now rqcogqizq that this treatment should be provided free. Rehabilitation services, available in every state to patients who need them, are now recognized as part of the tuberculosis patient’s treatment. Such services help the patient, .once he leaves the hospital, return to com munity life as a useful, self-supporting citizen. Every phase of the tuberculosis con trol program should be accompanied by health education. People must learn the facts about tuberculosis and its prevention and what is still need ed to help the community fight tu berculosis most effectively. The leadership in the fight against tuberculosis in most American com munities is provided by the official health department and the voluntary tuberculosis association, which is af filiated with the National Tuberculosis Association. These agencies, while con centrating on the particular tubercu losis problems in their areas, co ordinate their work with the nation wide campaign against tuberculosis under the leadership of official health agencies and the National Tubercu losis Association.
