PAGE FOUR Timely Suggestions About Ornamentals Miss Rebecca Colwell, Home Agent, Releases Information Miss Rebecca Colwell, home demon stration agent, this week releases the following timely information regard ing ornamentals: Roses—Plant pathologist says stem canker, a disease that attacks the stems of roses causing limbs to wilt and die, continues to bother us late in the fall after we quit dusting or spraying and starts early in the spring before we start our control program. Keep the plants dusted or sprayed with Fermate at least every two weeks until November Ist and start treat ment again in early March. Prepare the bed now and plant your new roses in November if possible. Bulbs—October and early November are the best times to plant hardy bulbs. The depth to plant bulbs will de pend upon the type of soil you have.' For the average garden loam, set ero-j cus, chiondoxa, and snowdrops about 1 2 to 3 inches apart with the tops of the bulbs about 2 inches below the soil surface. Plant bulbous iris about 4 inches apart and at least 3 inches deep. Plant hyacinths 4to 6 inches apart and about 4 inches deep. Tulips can be set 4 to 8 inches apart and they respond well to deep planting, especi ally in light sandy soil. Shallow plant ing and high temperatures seem to cause tulip bulbs to multiply rapidly. Mr. CvVey, Candler Bldg., Baltimore 2, Md. • sept2B,octs p After the first year’s single stem and large bloom there appears the next year numerous stems and small blooms or no blooms at all. If your soil is a well-drained sandy loam type, (or if you can make it that type), plant the tulip bulbs 8 to 12 inches deep, down where the soil will stay cool, and leave them alone for several years. If your soil is a heavy red clay or a type that doesn’t drain 'well, plant your bulbs about 6 inches deep and take them up every year. Store them in your refrigerator or locker plant un til November at a temperature be tween 45 and 70 degrees F. The idea is to keep the bulbs at a temperature below 70 degrees F. Also plant daffo dils fairly deep, about 4 to 8 inches apart and 6 to 8 inches from soil sur face to base of the bulb. In general, plant all bulbs deeper in light soils than in heavy ones. It has been found that animal manures and or ganic fertilizers, such as tankage, ap plied at the time of planting, have a tendency to increase the rotting of both daffodils and gladiolus. If you will apply these organic fertilizers 4 to 6 months prior to planting bulbs, there is little danger from their use. On most sojls, commercial fertilizer mixtures such as 5-10-5 or 6-8-6 worked into the soil before planting at the rate of about 4 pounds per 100 i square feet will prove beneficial. 1 Peonies—Now is a good time to ( plant peonies. Plant them in good soil about two inches deep (crown 2 inches below surface). If you are bothered with disease, keep the foliage sprayed with bordeaux next spring. Keep the foliage green as long as possible, but if you see disease set ting in, remove the stems and foliage at a point below the diseased portion and bum.
