C., THURSDAY, OCTOBER 12, 19S0. Night Driving Less Dangerous Than Day Says CMC President 8,589 Accidents At Night In 1949; 12,613 In Daylight Night driving in the Carolinas is less dangerous than day driving in total number of accidents, but is eight per cent more dangerous in the number of accidents which prove fa tal, Coleman W. Roberts, president of the Carolina Motor Club, reports. Night highway accidents account for 49 per cent of the Carolinas’ traffic fatalities, while resulting in only 41 per cent of the total accidents. Os 31,904 accidents reported in the Carolinas in 1949, only 13,139 occur red at night' against 18,765 daylight accidents. However, fatal accidents , jumped to 580 in the Carolinas for night driving as compared with 619 daylight fatalities for the two states. National figures indicate that night driving is 36 per cent less dangerous than day in total number of accidents but is 23.5 per cent more dangerous | in the number of fatal accidents. The chief cause of night traffic’s fatality rate per vehicle per mile or per accident is unsafe visability due to darkness and the lack of adequate light. Conservative estimates indicate that inadequate light and the resulting reduced visability can be charged, di rectly or indirectly, with 59 per cent of night traffic deaths, or approxi mately 10,000 lives annually. In North Carolina in 1949 8,589 ac cidents occurred at night against 12,- 613 in daylight. In South Carolina, 4,550 accidents occurred at night against 6,152 during the day. In fatalities, South Carolina shows that 242 deaths occurred at night as compared with 234 in daylight. How ever, in North Carolina, 338 were kill ed in night accidents as compared with 385 during daylight. About a fifth of the UtlOftERM Circulating Heater Ms tag 250 Gal. Size *109.95 property value of the farms is des troyed, as an average, each time a fire gets out of hand. In some areas the average loss is much higher, and in big fires there is added loss of life and suffering from major burns. H. M. Ellis, in charge of agricultural engineering for the State College Ex tension Service, points out that all fires Btart as small fires, and most of them could be prevented. Some precautions are: Have a portalble-type water extin guisher handy. If you have a pres sure system, have spigots fitted for hose. Have proper extinguishers ready for electrical and flammable liquid fires— don’t use water. Keep at hand a sturdy ladder long enough to reach the roof of farm buildings. To prevent fires, don't smoke in the bam, in bed, or near flammable liq uids. Don’t refuel tractor while motor is running or hot. Don’t use kero sene or gasoline to hasten fires. Don’t overload the wiring system—check it frequently. Don’t operate or store the tractor in the bam. Don’t locate fuel tanks close to buildings; put them on the downward slope. A single grateful thought toward Heaven is the most perfect prayer. —G. E. Lessing.
