M Caldwell, Director of the North Caro lina Veterans CaVnmission, reports. The North Carolina Veterans Com mission, by and with the cooperation of all veterans’ organizations in the State, is conducting a special cam paign to locate and help all “forgot ten” war widows, orphans and depend ent parents of deceased veterans to, file and develop their claims. The ( campaign has gotten off to a splendid start. “Widows of veterans of World War I whose income is SI,OOO or less a year are entitled to a pension of $42 a month from the Federai Govern ment,” Mr. Caldwell points out.. Those widows with children under certain ages are entitled to extra compensation provided their income is not over $2,500 per year. Service by the veteran must have been between April 6, 1917, and No vember 11, 1918, and discharge or re lease from active duty must have been under other than dishonorable condi tions after 90 days or more of mili tary service. For the purposes of a pension a widow must have been married to a World War I veteran before December 14, 1944, or 10 or more years to the person who served and must not have remarried. District services officers of the J North Carolina Veterans Commission,: county veterans service officers and post service officers of the various veterans organizations are ready to assist or advise veterans or their de pendents on all pension or compensa tion benefits, and a special campaign is being conducted by the North Caro lina Veterans Commission and the county veterans service officers and the post service officers of all the various veterans organizations from September 15 to December 15 to locate and help all such eligible widows and orphans to file their claims properly. ’BPW CM Winds lip Celebration Tea Party Women Fea tured By Displays In Local Windows Edenton’s Business and Profession al Women’s Club completed a suc cessful program during the observance of Business Women’s Week held Oc tober 15-21. Attractive posters desig nating the Federation’s theme “Meas ure Up For Full Partnership,” fea turing the Edenton Tea Party women who “measured up” to their responsi bilities by refusing to drink unjustly taxed tea, and thus to inspire the col onies to fight for their freedom from England, were on display in local store windows and created much interest. This group of public spirited women is often spoke of as “America’s First Civic Women’s Club.” The celebration got underway on y Sunday, 'October 15, with announce ment of the club’s selection of the “Outstanding Woman of the Year,” which honor went to Mrs. W. S. Sum merell, beloved 87-year-old pioneer teacher. The club presented Mrs. Summerell a dozen red roses on that day. Another highlight during the obser vance of National Business Women’s Week, was an address iby Mrs. Rich ard D. Dixon, who spent two years in Nuremburg, Germany, with Judge Dixon while he was on the war crimi nal trials bench. Mrs. Di*on spoke on “The Activities and Freedom ‘ of. German Women Compared to Ameri can Women,” at the business meeting held Thursday night at the Hotel Jos eph Hewes. At this meeting the club was presented a United Nations Flag by Mrs. Wesley Chesson, Sr., Presi dent of the County Council of Home Demonstration Clubs. During the week also Mrs. Elizabeth Corbett, a member of the local club anli of the nursing staff at Chowan Hospital, who is on leave of absence for private duty In Rochester, N. Y., remembered the chib with a telegram.
