Dr. Horton Advances An Idea For Solving Problems In Wildlife fays Farmer Is Entitled To Reasonable Profit For Game A plan different from any yet of fered to solve the problems of 4 wild life conservation is advanced by Dr. J. S. Dorton, manager of the N. C. State Fair. Dr. Dorton’s idea is that all wild life belongs—at least fairly and tech nically—to the farmer on whose land it is found, and that the farmer is “justly entitled to a reasonable profit from the hunting, killing or catching of such wild life on his property.” “When these facts are recognized by both State and Federal authorities, and these principles established and the entire problem approached from the angle of making it profitable for ' w our farmers to cultivate, maintain, propogate and protect this great farm and field crap, then and only then will we have an abundance of game and f.’sh in North Carolina,” Dr. Dorton A said. » The fair manager got off on his ideas of wild life conservation when asked about the success of the wild life exhibit—“ Nature Wonderland” — at the 1950 State Fair. More than a quarter of a million persons visited this free exhibit, which Dr. Dorton termed the greatest dis play of wild life ever assembled in North Carolina. “This exhibit came about through a desire of many years of the fair management to arouse the interest of the masses of the people in the great potential possibilities of the wild life resources of our ’State as on* of our leading sources of recreation, educa tion and income,” the fair manager said. “When we recognize the fact that the farmer is entitled to a reasonable profit from hunting and fishing on his property, then we will within a few years become a sportsman’s paradise just as the Dakotas have become for pheasant hunting,” Dr. Dorton said. “It is my opinion that this problem »pf wild life conservation and develop ment can never 'be solved until all agencies and individuals meet' to gether on a common basis to solve this problem from every angle.
