Mr. Gray released the following message to the people of North Caro lina: “I am sure that all of our citizens are encouraged .by the fact that North Carolina has now become a health conscious state. Fortunately, our people have shown both a willingness and determination to take action, not only to raise our levels of health and well being, but specifically to address themselves to defined areas of our general problem. “One of these areas, of course, is tu berculosis. Although great .progress has been made in the first half of this century in fighting this disease —the death rate in 60 years has declined from approximately 200 per hundred thousand to less than 30 per hundred thousand—the battle is far from won. *“r “Tuberculosis remains our number one health problem offering .promise of solution, for although it is not now the number one killer, it is the num ber one killer knorwn to be prevent able. ' “Tuberculosis kills more people be tween the ages of 16 and 46 than any other disease. It, therefore, attacks our people disastrously at a time of their life when they are being edu cated and trained and becoming start ed in their occupational and domestic lives and during the early period of maytaq ( Everything a Fa -4 I p mous Gyrafoam washing action gets out all the dirt . . . daintiest fabrics. m \ mSsm Liberal trad*-in. g j Low monthly pay- I x—n ments. There are thought to be as many as 12,000 cases in North Caro ’ lina today and, although the death ' rate is being sharply reduced, new , methods of case finding supplemented ' by mass X-rays are bringing to light 1 an increasing number of newly re r ported cases. ’ "We are organized to carry on the war of prevention', and there is an agency which has as its goal, and only ’ goal, the elimination of the disease. 1 This agency, the North Carolina Tu -1 berculosis Association, is one to r which we can give our support gladly, * cheerfully and with satisfaction, be : cause of its experience in accomplish -1 ing results. Over a period of years 5 there have been hundreds of tliou r sands of our fellow citizens who have wished to join in the victorious fight ’ against tuberculosis, and each year * they have purchased Christmas seals ! in generous amounts.
