Bankers Sponsor Speaking Contest Various Prizes Will Be Awarded High School v i Students M ' f | The North Carolina Bankers Asso ciation is again sponsoring a speak ing contest for all white high school .Students, grades 9-12. This contest very similar to those sponsored by the Bankers Association in the past, and should prove yto be very inter esting and worthwhile to many high school boys and girls Os 'both Eden ton and Chowan High .Schools. The subject of the speech for 1951 is “Green Pastures, Their Place in the Eaonomy of North Carolina.' The .prizes are as follows: School Prizes—.lst prize, $lO in cash; 2nd prize, $5 in cash; 3rd prize, $2.50 in cash. v County Prizes—sls.oo in cash. Regional Prizes—lst prize, SSO bond; 2nd prize, $25 bond. State Prizes—lst prize, S4OO in sav ings bonds; 2nd prize SIOO in savings bonds; 3rd prize, SSO iii savings bonds. The dates of the contest are as fol lows: March 16, 1951, School contest; March 23, 1951, county contest; April 3, for group contest and April 6, for the State contest. This speaking contest has had many contestants in the past years and much interest has been shown. High school students may obtain additional information from their principal or agricultural teacher. At 9 o’clock a » book review was given by the first grade room under the supervision of Mrs. T. J. Evans. George Holley, age 6, won the first prize. This prize was given and presented by Mrs. Elizabeth _ Byrd, county supervisor. The third 1 and fourth grades presented the col t ors to the second grade for a week of 1 perfect attendance. ’ At 2 o’clock the third and fourth grades gave their first television show. 1 This show came over Station TFG. Os these arrested 40 were white males, three white females, 32 colored males and one colored fe male. , Miscellaneous traffic violations led the arrests with 22, followed by drunks with 20. Fines amounted to '55429.50, costs $5469.85 for a total of $899.45. Os this amount $152.45 was turned over to the town in way of of ficers’ fees. During the month police answered 108 calls, investigated six accidents, worked four , funerals, reported 62 street lights out, extended 29 cour-l tesies, found 16 doors unlocked, made 26 investigations, answered three fire calls and issued 391 citations. The police made 604 radio calls and were on the air 53 minutes and 20 seconds.
