PAGE TWELVE Interest Mounting In Safety Program Big Parade Is Scheduled To Be Held Friday Afternoon In connection with the 'Bicycle Safe ty program sponsored this week by) the Junior Woman’s Club, a film on “Bike Behavior” was shown Monday morning at the white and colored schools by 'Mrs. J. R. Futrell, field representative of the State Highway Safety Division. The schedule of activities beginning Monday 'through 'Friday were discuss ed by Mrs. T. C. Byrum, Jr., chair man of the bicycle safety program. Much enthusiasm was aroused among the children and pledge cards, stick ers for their hikes and a booklet on “Bike Behavior” were presented each child from the first to eighth grades. Each afternoon Junior Woman’s Club members spotted riders to check on the safety rules. Twelve ice cream cones and three show passes were awarded every day throughout the week. Wednesday a patrolman spoke to the school children and the parade was discussed in detail. Today (Thursday) at noon the pos- ■ iters and slogans will Ibe collected to be judged. A prize will be awarded to the 'best poster from the first through the third grades, fourth through the sixth grades, and seventh through the eighth grade. One prize will be award ed for the best slogan throughout all grades. The ones selected will be dis played in Badham Bros., window Fri day morning. Friday will be the big day, when a parade will be held. Each child par , ticipating in the parade is asked to be on the school grounds at 3:15 for formation. A patrol car will lead, fol lowed by the flag bearers and the High School Band. Then will follow Boy and Cub 'Scouts who do not have bi cycles. Next will be the (Roper color ed school band and colored school chil dren on their bikes. The parade will begin at 4 o’clock, leaving the school grounds and march ing down Church Street to Broad, turning and going down south to the end of Broad, where prizes will be awarded by Mayor Leroy Haskett. Over Hundred Scouts Present At Jamboree Over 100-Boy Scouts broke camp Sunday afternoon at the Edenton Marine Corps Air (Station after a two day camporee of the West Albemarle District. Scouts represented troops at Edenton, Hertford, New Hope, Sun bury, Gatesville, Tyner and Rocky Hock, all of whom were accompanied by their Scoutmasters or assistant Scoutmasters. The boys pitched their tents on various spots near Athal House and apparently enjoyed every minute of the outing. Featuring Saturday night’s activi ties was a huge camp fire and a de lightful program was in charge of Scout Executive Bin Sutherland. Mr. Sutherland led the boys in various yells and each troop put on a stunt before the raging fire. Special music on an accordian and guitar by two Ma rines also delighted the large crowd, which also included members of the Edenton Cub Pack. Mr. Sutherland introduced various Scouters and other guests,, calling , upon W. T. Harry and Scoutmaster C. W. Overman for a few numbers. During the ceremony various Scouts were advanced and awards made to troops having the best record in camp. On Sunday morning a religious ser vice was held, at which -the Rev. E. Mrs. Erie Haste, was I installed as president to succeed Mrs.! ‘ A. .F. 'Downum. Other officers install ed included Mrs. Robert 'Boyce, vice president; Mrs. Lloyd Bunch, secre tary, and Mrs. Haywood Bunch, treas urer. The devotional at the meeting was led by J. O. Powers. May 12, Boy Scouts will join with those in the Tidewater Coun cil in staging a clothing drive. Boy Scouts will thus share in a nation wide “good turn” by collecting cloth ing that can be spared .by citizens to meet an urgent need in many coun tries around the world.
