pleted a three-day celebration of the
250th anniversary of the church and
the 68th Diocesan Convention Tues
day, with all services very well at
tended. Jlighligteting the services
were addresses by the IRt. (Rev. Thom
, as H. Wright, Bishop of East Caro
- lina; the Rt 'Rev. (Richard (Baker,' Bis
hop Coadjutor of the Diocese of North
Carolina and the Rt. Rev. John B.'
Bentley, vice-president of thie National
Council of the (Protestant Episcopal
Church of America.
i The church was crowded to capacity
Sunday afternoon when a sacred music
concert was presented by Norman
Cordan, former Grand Opera singer,
as soloist, and Hugh T. Harrison of
Suffolk as organist.
The 1952 Diocesan Convention will
be held in St. Peter’s Church in Wash
ington, N. C.

Women’s Club will celebrate its third
birthday anniversary at a dinner meet
ing tonight in the Hotel
Joseph Hewefe dining room at 7:30
o’clock, at which time the new offi
cers for the fiscal year will be in
stalled. .
The Rev. Gordon Bennett, rector of
'St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, will be
guest speaker ( for the occasion and an
interesting program has been arrang
ed by the hospitality committee.
Mrs. Josie Ruth Carr, president, re
quests that club members bring to the
meeting any club material now in their
possession as it may be useful to in
coming officers and committee chair
* men.
The dinner will (Be served by Mrs.
. L. Boswell and plates will be ($1.65,
including tax and tips. Mrs. Uydia
Daniels, co-chairman of the hospitality
committee, asks that those planning
to attend the dinner to please
her at once so that proper arrange
ments may .be made.
The president urges that all mem
bers be on hand for the dinner and j
installation of officers.

The marriage of Miss Maxine Lane,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. (Lyndon H.
Lane of Tyner, to Pvt. Raymond
Bunch, USA, son of Mr. and Mrs.
L A. Bunch of Edenton, took £lace
Suiiday afternoon, April 29, at 4
o’clock in the Edenton Baptist Par-
sonage. The Rev. R. N. Carroll per
formed the ceremony.
The bride wore a pink suit with
navy accessories and an orchid cor
sage. Mrs. Leon lane of Hertford,
was her only attendant.
Leon Lane of Hertford served as
best man.
Immediately following the ceremony
the newly-weds left for a short wed
ding trip.

Friends will regret to know that
Mrs. E. W. Spires is confined to her
home by illness. Mrs. Spires became
ill with influenza, which developed
into pneumonia. She is gradually im
proving, however

Only Contest
In one of the lightest votes in re
cent years, Edenton’s municipal elec
tion attracted less than 150 people to
the polls Tuesday to elect Town offi
cials for a two-year term.
With only one contest, Dr. J. A.
Powell polled the highest vote with
143 ballots. W. H. Gardner was sec
ond highest with 142 votes. Aside
from the official slate of candidates,
there were two votes written on the
ballots. One of these was for John
F. White for Mayor and one for R. E.
Leary for treasurer.
In the Third Ward John Mitchener
easily won over Edward Wozelka for
Councilman to succeed A. B. Harless,
who declined to seek re-election. .Mit
chener received 89 votes against 13
for Wozelka.
Officials who were re-elected are:
Mayor, Leroy Haskett; Treasurer, W.
H. Gardner; Councilmen-at-large, J.
Edwin Buffiap and W. J. Yates; First
Ward Councilman, J. Clarence Leary;
Second Ward Councilman, G. M. By
rum; Fourth Ward Councilman, Clyde
Hollowell; Board of Public Works, J.
H. Conger, Dr. J. A. Powell and Ralph
Parrish.
'Votes cast for the candidates were
as follows: L. H. Haskett, 137; W.
H. Gardner, 142; J. Edwin Buffiap,
138; W. J. Yates, 137; J. Clarence
Leary, 36; G. M. Byrum, 27; John
Mitchener, 89; Edward Wozelka, 13;
Clyde Hollowell, 21; J. H. Conger,
137; Dr. J. A. Powell, 148; Ralph E.
Parrish, 140.
Dance Is Scheduled

lAll Edenton High 'School students
are excited by the news announced
Monday concerning a big semi-formal
dance to be held Friday night, May
18 for Edenton and Chowan High
schools in honor of the Senior classes. 1
The dance will be held in the armdry
at 8 o’clock.
Music for the dance will be furnish
ed by (Dick 'Levin and his orchestra,
and the dance will be free. The dance
is sponsored by some generous mys
terious citizen who doesn’t want his
name revealed until the night of the
dance.
Though the students do not know
the name of this person, they do know
that the reason is to cause better re
lations between the two schools. It
’ is certain every student in both schools
desire to personally convey his or
her thanks to this mysterious bene
