PAGE EIGHT 1950 Cotton Crop Is Smallest Since 1072 54 Per Cent of Reduction Is Attributed to 801 l Weevil North Carolina’s 1950 cotton crop totalled 181,000 bales of 600 pounds weight. This is the smallest, crop since 1872, and compares with the 1949 production of 466,000 'bales. Production is based on the Bureau of the Census final ginnings with al lowances made for cross-state move ment The 696,000 acres in cultivation on July 1 was 278,000 acres or 31 per cent less than in the 1949 acreage. This sharp reduction in acreage from a year ago was due primarily to the reinstatement of cotton acreage al lotments and the failure of some farm ers to plant their full allotted acre age. Abandonment 49ter July 1,1960, in cluding the acreage removed from cultivation to comply with allotments is estimated at 3.6 per cent leaving 575,000 acres harvested. This is the same as the 1945 harvested acreage and the smallest cotton crop harvest ed since 1872. The small acreage harvested in 1950 was chiefly due to the unusually heavy boll weevil dam age and unfavorable weather during the growing season. Lint yield per acre during 1950 averaged 151 pounds compared with 259 pounds in 1949. This is the lowest yield per acre Since 1889. According to reports from crop cor respondents, the reduction from a full yield from all causes in North Carolina was 69 per cent. Reduction caused by weevil alone was reported at 54 per cent. This was the worst weevil damage on record and compares with a loss of 27‘per cent attributed to weevils in 1949. Excessive mois ture caused an 8 per cent reduction in full yield in 1950, compared with 10 per cent in 1949. The remaining loss in yield from the 1950 crop was attributed to deficient moisture, other climatic conditions, plant diseases and . .
